Product Review: Target Swivel Ring-Back Office Chair

James Gapinski
Target's Swivel Ring-Back Office Chair offers instant appeal to anybody interested in a modern-looking chair for a modest price. But does that lower price come at the cost of quality?

Cost: First off, the chair isn't as inexpensive as it appears at first glance. The Swivel Ring-Back Office Chair is an only available online through Target's website. There is currently no way of finding this item in stores, so the buyer is going to be stuck with a shipping fee. The fee is nominal, but it is still something to consider since the chair itself is already bargain priced and therefore is likely to attract consumers on tight budgets-even a nominal shipping charge can make a difference. All things considered, the chair still comes in below triple digits-an admittedly good price for modern-looking furniture.

Shipping/Packaging: Further on the subject of shipping, the distribution process itself is pretty fast. It usually ships within 24 hours and arrives within 3 to 5 business days thereafter. Target sends a courtesy e-mail to let the buyer know when the item has shipped. Unfortunately, the packaging is not very well designed, with only minimal cardboard support within the box, offering little product buffering. The pieces are individually wrapped in plastic to absorb some shipping and handling bumps, but occasional small scratches are to be expected with this item-nothing too major, but it should factor into the buying decision. If the item is truly damaged, it can be conveniently returned to any Target store.

Assembly: Assembly is surprisingly simple. It can be accomplished in less than 20 minutes with just one person. The assembly directions fit onto a simple, single-sided sheet of paper-it's that simple. Additionally, the pieces are all individually wrapped for easy sorting. In theory, you will not need any tools because they are provided in the box. But in practice, an adjustable wrench may be needed to screw on the wheels. The wrench provided is weak and bends easily, a stronger wrench is needed since the pilot holes do not always match the threading perfectly. It is a small annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.

Stability: Once assembled, the chair is pretty sturdy. There is a reason that it is called an office chair: it isn't meant for excessive abuse. As long as the chair is used for simple sitting and occasional wheeled mobility around the desk, it holds up fine. Just don't lean back over and over or tempt fate by using it as a stepping stool to change light bulbs. It gets the job done, but is understandably weakened by the chair's modern, thinline look.

Comfort: In terms of comfort, the Swivel Ring-Back Office Chair gets a big thumbs up. Its minimalistic look leaves one to assume a rigid, unconformable surface, but the chair is anything but. The Swivel Ring-Back Office Chair offers excellent support and is surprisingly even a little bit flexible-mostly due to its thin design.

Overall, the chair offers a cheap modern-looking option for any home office or business. It shouldn't be overly-abused, but daily wear and tear will not damage this product. It's pretty durable, definitely affordable, and easy to assemble-for this, the chair gets a good 8 out 10.
