Product Review for Teachers: DNA Dynamo!

Manda Spring
If you are a teacher then you know that it can sometimes be difficult to get students interested in science as well as every other subject. The thing that I have found to be true is that ALL kids love an experiment. There is nothing more priceless in a teacher's day than looking at the eyes of interested kids yearning to learn.

I have, in the past, run into problems with my class over DNA. We all know that there are endless studies that need to be brought forth and most of the time by the end of the year the children will only have remembered enough information to barely scratch the surface of the most elementary aspects of DNA.

Needless to say I have decided to fit as many experiments into the year as feasibly possible. I am averaging one every week or so for good measure. This keeps the kids not only interested but entertained as well. And a happy class is a passing class.

"DNA: I Can Do That!" is a wonderful company that offers many wonderful products for teachers and students. The DNA Isolation Kit for Young Scientists really makes learning fun and exciting. The small manual is 26 pages long and has an awesome lab in it to remove the DNA from the cells once they have been broken open. Students love to feel like Crime Scene Investigators and who knows, maybe you can spark the interest in them to become future CSI 's.

I recommend this product for its ease and all-inclusive aspects. The experiments have so much value to them that the students fully remember each and every area after it is over. I had no failed tests all grades were above 80% in this area. I think the reason the grades were all so high is because the kids enjoyed and became truly captured by the excitement involved. Our discussions and class participation on this subject have improved as well as the over all grades.

Bottom line, if you are looking for a new and intriguing way to take hold of their attention and drive the premise of science home then this is definitely a superb tool to enhance the probability. Try out some of the other DNA activities as you struggle to teach even the most (seemingly) unreachable student. You'd be surprised how enlightened they become with a little hands on work. Remember, boredom never creates interest it only promotes laziness.

I think it is great that you take such time with your class to help them learn. I had one teacher that was like you. I never forgot him either. I grew up and invited him to my wedding. He meant a lot to me. Great article!
