Product Review: Tracfone LG 600G Clamshell Flip Cell Phone

Blair Mathis
Tracfone is making a real effort to introduce modern, connected and higher-end phones to their product line. One of the first cell phones to achieve the first spot as Tracfone's higher-end gadget is the LG 600g, featuring all the modern offerings desired: camera, Bluetooth, external display and Internet.

While it might not have as many specs as phones from places like Alltel, it does hold it's own as a modern phone. If you need a prepaid phone to avoid the constraints of a cell phone contract and the difficultly in breaking them, but want a modern phone that holds up to the times, the Tracfone LG 600g may be the phone for you.

Body

The body of the Tracfone LG 600g is a clamshell design, and features an internal antenna, external screen, and rectangular body with rounded edges. The phone is black in color, and features a silver keypad and camera lens to contrast it.

Overall, it is a pleasure to hold in the hand, and feels durable enough to hand the abuse of everyday life as a regularly used cell phone.

The front screen and lens are covered with a protective clear piece of plastic, which is a nice perk, and keeps both the lens and screen dust/scratch free.

The dedicated volume button is located on the side of the phone, and is easy to use with a thumb while the phone is in a pocket or while you're talking.

Features

The features are what makes this phone what it is, and introduce Tracfone to a new type of consumer. The most pleasing feature to be found on this phone is Bluetooth, something Tracfone has been lacking.

The Bluetooth is surprisingly open and unlimited, which is better than the Bluetooth feature on the W360g, which only allows headset pairing. On the 600g, you can pair the phone with a computer and then transfer pictures taken with the phone from the cell to the computer. You can also transfer music and photos from your computer to your cell phone, which is another awesome option.

In addition to the connectivity, you can also use the Bluetooth for a wireless stereo headset, which allows you to use this phone while driving in a states with wireless laws.

The camera also sports a VGA camera, which allows you to take photos on the go, as well as an external display to monitor the status of your phone without opening the cover (which drains battery life).

Another excellent perk was the ability to take photos with the phone closed - the photo will simply appear on the external scree. This makes it easier to get candied shots, and to get a photo faster than you would having to flip it open.

Cons

The screen on this phone is not as good as the one found on the W360g, which is Tracfone's other higher-end phone. It is has a poorer viewing angle - the colors when wonky and eventually inverted when I tipped and turned the phone, which was irritating when looking at photos.

The other downside to the phone isn't really a problem of the phone, but instead of Tracfone's - the web browser. It's clunky, slow, and pretty much only good for accessing the Tracfone mobile website to buy wallpapers. It is not very easy to use, isn't very attractive, and is overall frustrating to use.

Conclusion

This phone is very nice, and is a wonderful addition to the Tracfone line. The Bluetooth feature deserves much praise, as you can transfer photos without having to pay for it - something very few phones, no matter the service provider, offer.

This phone has just about everything you could want in a phone - the ability to take shots with the lid closed, open Bluetooth, a VGA camera. It is a very nice option for any new or existing Tracfone user.
