Product Review: Tracfone Samsung T101G Prepaid Cell Phone

Blair Mathis
Tracfone, the first big prepaid cell phone provider that brought cell phones to those unwilling or unable to get a contract, has been expanding its phone lineup for years now. The latest phone offered by the company is the Samsung T101G, a candy bar style cell phone. This device has a suggested retail price of $9.99, making it an exceptionally cheap option for those who need an inexpensive phone for a grade school child, as a backup, or to use as simply as a cell phone and nothing else.

Features

Features on the T101G are as basic as they come, something that should be expected given this phone's extremely low price point. The phone comes with the basic 'apps' found on any cellphone. There is an alarm clock, which is loud enough to wake up most people, as well as a calculator, and a contacts feature will can hold up to 100 features. The phone has caller ID and comes preloaded with 15 different polyphonic ringtones. Additional ringtones can be downloaded from using the phone's browser. There is a vibration setting for those times a beeping cellphone wouldn't be acceptable. The keypad can be locked, and there are various key combinations.

Users can check the balance of their minutes by navigating the menus on the phone-this doesn't cost you anything the first few times per day.

The phone itself is light and easy to hold. The buttons have a nice tactile feel. The screen isn't very high quality, but considering that you'll only be glancing at it most of the time, the screen quality doesn't matter that much. There is no external antenna; the body of the cellphone is multi-colored black and gray.

Conclusion

The Tracfone T101G is a ten dollar phone that does the most basic things a cell phone can do. It isn't intended for those who want to surf the Internet, take or upload pictures, or check on your Facebook status-this phone is meant for making phone calls, and that is all. For such a cheap price, you can't beat this phone, just don't expect more than pushing buttons and talking.

I.E., STARTED OUT WITH A GOOD SAMSUNG, HAD TRACFONE PORT MY # & MINS ONTO IT, THEN THE "GOOD" SAMSUNG STARTED ACTING LIKE THE "BAD" SAMSUNG WITH NO OR ONLY 1 BAR AND POOR AUDIBILITY. HELP!

Ref: See Dec. posts by Disgruntled One

Got so discouraged/disgruntled with the 2nd Samsung T101G which would not perform like the FIRST (GREAT) T101G that I had Tracfone transfer my phone number and minutes off the poor performer onto my origial T101G, and... DARN! You guessed it! Now my original T101G is acting just like the poor-performer T101G!? Instead of getting 3,4 bars, I am now getting 0 or 1 bar, and audibility seems poorer than it did BEFORE I SWITCHED SIM CARDS and transferred content over from the 2nd T101G.
WHAT THE HECK IS CAUSING THIS? IT SOUNDS LIKE TRACFONE IS SHIPPING DEFECTIVE OR MALFUNCTIONING SIMCARDS, or AT&T IS DOING SOMETHING TO CAUSE POOR RECEPTION. CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT, BUT WE NOW HAVE FOUR LOUSY TRACFONES (ALREADY HAD 2 DIFFERENT MODELS BEFORE WE STARTED WITH SAMSUNG), AND THIS IS REALLY MAKING US UNHAPPY.
ANY IDEAS AS TO WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN? I.E., STARTED OUT WITH A GOOD SAMSUNG, HAD TRACFONE PORT MY # & MINS ONTO IT, THEN THE "GOOD" PHON

This is a great simple phone at an incredible price! I think for most of us who use prepaid, the priority list goes price, reliability and simplicity. This phone definitely fits the bill!

Correction: Battery shows as fully charged, but the 2nd phone seems very WEAK in all respects.

I liked this T101 so well I got a second one, so I could transfer landline # onto it. Unfortunately, the 2nd Samsung T101 is nothing like the first: Can't get enough bars for receiving/sending calls; the light is dim and the audio is faint. I have the two phones side by side, and I can get 4 bars on older T101, and usually one or no bars on 2nd T101. Battery shows as fully charged, but the 2nd phone seems very in all respects. Very Disappointed!

Tracfone has been a really good buy for me. I really appreciate having full control of my phone bill each month with no hidden costs at all. This phone looks like a good option to go for.

i just purchased one for $10, and love it. It's slim, light, and has all the basic functions one would want in a cellphone. Don't expect to play games or access much on the web, but it's great for texting. I love how it isn't too bulky or awkward to put in a shirt pocket and carry with you all day. The display screen is small, but it works well. Only issue I seem to have presently is that I'm not getting all 4 bars on the antenna signal like I did with the Motorola, but all the texts I sent went through. Time will tell if it's as good on voice as my Motorola. So far so good though.

Just got this phone the other day because tracfone has been running a DOUBLE MINUTES FOR LIFE promotion upon its purchase. It's a great compact phone useful for talking and texting. It's simple, durable, and easy-to-use. Check it out.
