Product Review: Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Pita Chips with Sea Salt
Less Fat, Retains Most of the Flavor
In a previous review, I gave my assessment of the Trader Joe's Pita Chips with Sea Salt. It received the thumbs up. Since that time I've purchased and enjoyed quite a few bags of those pita chips. I usually eat more than the recommended serving amount. Nonetheless I've got to have my pita chips.
I recently stopped at Trader Joe's to purchase some of sea salt pita chips as well as a few other items. I expressed to my husband concern over the number of chips I eat in one sitting and the calorie and fat content, so he suggested I try the reduced version, Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Pita Chips with Sea Salt. I grimaced at the thought thinking much of what I like in the regular Trader Joe's pita chips would be lacking in the reduced guilt version. I was somewhat correct.
The Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Pita Chips with Sea Salt comes in 6 ounce bags for $1.99 each.
When I opened the bag the first thing I noticed was that the pita chips were slightly thinner than the regular kind and both sides were smooth. I would be missing out on having the chips with one side rougher side of concentrated sea salt flavor. I could see a light dusting of sea salt on the chips. After eating a few of the chips I realized that the sea salt flavor was inside of each chip. I had to eat them in a way as to expose the inside of the chip to maximize the flavor. This was a personal eating method others may or may not choose, of course.

In comparing the nutrition facts between Trader Joe's Pita Chips with Sea Salt and Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Pita Chips with Sea Salt I noticed that there is only a slight difference in calories, and a slightly bigger difference between the calories from fat. There is also a decrease in the total fat, but a large increase in sodium. Whatever reduces the fat is made up by the increase in sodium.
For those that like the regular Trader Joe's Pita Chips with Sea Salt, stick with them if you have no major concerns regarding calories and fat. Just eat fewer of them. The drop in calories and fat and the increase in sodium for the Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Pita Chips with Sea Salt is not worth the hassle.
If you are concerned about your calorie and fat intake, but not so much about the sodium intake, then consider giving the Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Pita Chips with Sea Salt a try. You may actually prefer this style of chip as it is thinner and smooth on each side. It also works just as well as other pita chips for dipping in various dips and hummus flavors.
