Product Review: Virgin Mobile Broadband 2 Go Prepaid High Speed Internet USB Modem

Blair Mathis
Prepaid cell phone plans have been very popular for the last few years, and are growing in both cell phone selections and costs. The latest technological advancement in cell phone technology is mobile broadband over the 3G network, which ranges in speeds from 500kbs to 1.5MBs. Though until recently, mobile broadband has only been available in the form of a two-year contract. Contracts were not an option for many people due to either poor credit or the unwillingness to be obligated to a 24 month contract.

Virgin Mobile, the popular prepaid cell phone service, has launched a prepaid broadband service called Broadband2Go, which runs on Sprint's network. It is priced reasonably (when compared to other companies), and can be activated and deactivated as needed, making it an ideal option for those wanting mobile Internet without a contract.

Installation

Installation was hard and frustrating. I kept getting errors, and technical support wasn't helping too much. Eventually I got it to launch the software (which is loaded on the USB modem), and at that point, it installed without any problem. Individuals trying to install the modem on Mac OS X have reported similar difficulty, but it doesn't appear to be a universal problem.

Software

The included software comes with a bandwidth meter, which will monitor all incoming and outgoing data transfer you use on your device. If you go over the allotted subscription bandwidth, you'll be charged a high price per MB.

Plans

The prices start at $10 for 100MB, but they expire in a short ten days. The highest rate is $60 for 5GB, which is the highest bandwidth limit. The USB modem itself is priced at $99, which is reduced from the previous price of $150.

The benefit of this plan is the ability to select which months you will use the plan, and to simply not pay on the months you don't want to use. This is a freedom that contract plans don't offer.

Modem

The modem is a USB drive that is the same size as a normal USB flash drive, and is approximately the size of a 5-stick pack of gum. It is made of plastic and is durable enough to handle a small drop, but should be taken care of adequately.

Conclusion

If you need a mobile broadband plan but aren't willing to join a contract, then the Virgin Mobile prepaid Broadband2Go is an excellent option.
