Product Review: Wild Berry Skittles

Raspberry, Strawberry, Wild Cherry, Berry Punch, Melon Berry

I have always been a huge Skittles fan, though have been trying to cut down on my candy intake lately. But I've been good, so while out this morning, at the bus station, I just had to grab a pack of Skittles from the vending machine! And Wild Berry Skittles, at that! I remembered them being very sweet, & very good.

The Wild Berry Skittles package comes with 5 flavors: Raspberry (blue), Strawberry (pink), Wild Cherry (red), Berry Punch (purple), & Melon Berry (green). I like the colors, very easy to tell which is which. I made a little row of one of each of the flavors, & tried each, savoring it, trying to see if Skittles actually came close to making the candy taste like what the flavor was supposed to be.

First I tried "Melon Berry", the green one. It oddly did taste like honeydew melon, & blackberry together! Very different.

Then I tried "Wild Cherry", the red one. Tasted very cherry (teehee, little joke), & very sweet!

After that it was "Berry Punch", the purple one. I couldn't quite tell at first, which flavor it wanted to be. But then I realized it did taste like punch, which is, I guess, supposed to be different flavors. This one, though, was my least favorite flavor.

Next came "Strawberry", the pink one. Exactly what it was supposed to be--very sweet strawberry.

And finally, I tried "Raspberry", which was blue. Strong raspberry taste. And, like the Wild Cherry & the Strawberry, was very very sweet. No room for tartness in the Skittles factory!

When I turned the package over, I was most impressed by the ingredients. I expected the first ingredients to be sugars (sugar, then corn syrup), but after that, & the hydrogenated palm kernel oil, came actual fruit juices! Usually candies are all "artificial flavorings" or at best they merely say "natural & artificial flavors"--without actually telling you what these "flavors" are! But the Wild Berry Skittles actually contain real fruit juice (albeit from concentrate) : strawberry, cherry, raspberry, grape, & blackberry!
Oddly enough--there is no melon flavoring, or juice. But then again--there is no grape Wild Berry Skittle, so I guess it evens out!

On the downside, of course, is that the package (one serving size), is 250 calories, & 56 total grams of carbs (47 of which are sugar).

But on the upside, Wild Berry Skittles are extremely good, extremely sweet, & very fun!

Great article. I'm a Skittles lover, but I don't believe I've tried the Wild Berry Skittles. I'll have to pick some up on my way to work this afternoon. Excellent review!

I told my son about them. He loves the regular ones so will probably try these.
