Product Reviews: The Scratch'n Slumber Comfort Lounge by Brawny Cat

Best Cat Scratchers

Jenne Joy
It was the end of September 2010 when I was first contacted by Brawny Cat to test out and review one of their products. I've got two rescue cats (Gizmo, age 6 and Brio, nearing age 2) who are pretty heavy scratchers, so they're quite qualified to test the product. See how the Big Baby Jr. Scratch'n Slumber Lounge Bed fared with these two hard-hitting scratchers.

Initial Impressions

At first, when checking out the website, I was a bit put-off by the hefty price tag. Normally, I don't think I could see myself shelling out that much money for a scratcher; but my tune has definitely changed.

We've had our Big Baby Jr. for nearly a month now (it arrived on October 5th.) Originally I was going to give the product 2 weeks before reviewing, but upon seeing how well it stood out, I decided to give it at least up to (nearly) the full month. The bed is extremely large (our particular model is 22 inches by 23 inches,) and has plenty of room for both cats to lay comfortably.

The first week was mostly fighting over their Brawny Cat bed. Each cat wanted to claim it as their own, so at this point I'm convinced I'll need to buy a second bed just to keep them at bay.

Brawny Cat Review: The Big Baby Jr.

In short, this bed is a fantastic buy. As I mentioned before, the upfront cost can be a little intimidating but in the end, if you go through as many cat scratchers as our cats do, then this bed will save you money. On a good month, we might be able to get away with $60 worth of scratchers, and those are all dead within two weeks. So even though the bed is a bit more in upfront costs, the refill pads are $49.00 (for our particular model) and have already surpassed the length of time that traditional cardboard scratchers have lasted. I imagine it will be at least two more months before I need to buy a replacement.

Aside from saving you money, all of the Brawny Cat products are made in the USA; which is a big deal for some people. If you think that being USA made means that it will be of poor quality, I can assure you, you're wrong. I imagine this bed will last for several years; if not for the life of my two cats. Furthermore, the cardboard padlets are made from recycled cardboard and of course, are recyclable themselves; another big plus.

The cats really are drawn to the bed almost immediately. Brio acted as if he knew immediately that whatever was inside that giant box was meant for him. For the first few days, he would barely leave the bed! The minute we set it down, both cats were on it and scratching away like little fiends. (Which is quite amusing to watch, by the way.) Even today, they still both lounge on the bed for several hours a day.

So, try one for yourself. You'll be pleased and so will your cat(s.)

I just purchased one of these for my new kitty. From what I read it sounds great, I hope my baby will like it, too.
