Product Spotlight: Magnavox 19MF337B 19-inch LCD HDTV

Josh Cohen
The Magnavox 19MF337B is a quality HDTV that is worth far more that its relatively cheap purchase price of $300. This ultra-slim TV measures nineteen inches diagonally and a mere eleven pounds. The sleek black design is aesthetically pleasing with smooth bevels that are easy on the eyes. The adequate speakers are located compactly on the bottom portion of the TV.

This flat panel LCD screen provides an incredibly sharp display of all forms of media including cable TV, movies, video games, computer outputs, and countless other mediums. The Magnavox boasts an impressive 1440 x 900 pixel resolution with a 5 millisecond response time. During my few months with the TV I have yet to encounter a single display issue with any of these mediums. The lucidity of the screen coupled with high definition television feeds produce an unfathomable picture quality. The Magnavox is coupled with an over the air HDTV receiver that picks up high definition feeds excellently. Additionally, the TV is able to access cable HDTV. These two forms of HD provide vivid color and detail to a variety of shows and televised sporting events. There is a marked difference between the high definition content and standard definition (SDTV) content that is clearly displayed on this TV.

The Magnavox has an incredible array of inputs and outputs which are located conveniently on the back of the TV. The inputs are all well labeled and diagramed makings connections to external devices a synch. The available inputs are audio, composite video, PC audio, S-video, component video, HDMI, and VGA. Outputs include SPDIF coaxial digital audio and headphones. This repertoire of inputs and outputs should seamlessly fill the needs of all casual and midlevel consumers. Little is left to be desired in this aspect of the TV.

For concerned parents, this television comes equipped with a V-chip. This chip allows for the set-up of parental controls that limit the content children are able to view with this TV.

The remote included with this TV is one of its only major problems. The remote feels cheap when handled. Additionally, the use of the remote can be cumbersome and counterintuitive at times. The most prominent issue involves turning the TV on and off. If one is to turn the TV off using the button located on the TV the remote will not be able to turn on the TV again. Instead the user must get up and push the button on the TV to activate it. The remote can only turn on the TV if it was the last thing to turn off the TV. While this issue may appear minor and trivial, it is a major nuisance when the issue is repeatedly encountered as often is the case.

This TV does have many of the standard, yet useful amenities. These include closed captioning and a sleep timer. Furthermore, there are detailed settings for both audio and picture. For audio there are specific settings for speech based and audio based programs that improve overall quality of what is being viewed by adjusting settings to better fit the medium. For video there are a myriad of preset selections that adjust brightness and other key components that are optimized for various mediums. These features can prove to be very handy in a variety of situations and improve the effectiveness of the TV.

Overall, this is an excellent TV for anyone searching for an affordable and quality LCD HDTV TV. One would be hard pressed to find a better TV for a better price. The Magnavox provided the total package for a bottom based price. This TV is not flawless, but for its price one could not expect it to function any better. The size of the TV is not overwhelming, but is perfectly suited for small rooms such as dormitories and bedrooms.

I bet that remote feature would get pretty annoying. Good review.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like a good TV with the exception of the remote.

Great review! We're in the market for a new TV. I like the parental control feature you mention. The remote issue would be a downside for us. We also need something a bit bigger.
