HOW TO SHAPE A PLOT
The first step to take before beginning to write is to come up with a plot. You need to answer the questions of: What is the story about? What is the hero trying to accomplish? What is and who is preventing the hero from accomplishing his goal? A second thing to do is envision the end of your story. Ask yourself how do you want the story to end. Envision the big conflict to end the story, the conclusion to resolve the problem, and allow the hero to accomplish his goal. Writing the ending first and knowing the ending keeps the story from being open ended. Instead of going on and on, the writer knows the goal and resolution of the story's problem. The writer can focus on generating ideas for situations and events that will lead to the conclusion.
PROVIDE LITTLE DETAIL
When writing a story, whether it be a novel or film script, writers tend to be overly detail, describing every single thing, characters looks, location, sitting, exact sizes, shapes, and dimensions- boring. Very boring. Being so detail in this respect can cause a story to lose an agent's, a producer's, or a publisher's attention. Instead a writer should focus on a story's plot, the situations and events. Do not bother about describing in detail how a character or setting looks, especially when they are ordinary and common place. The only time when a writer should use detail description is when they are describing something that is extraordinarily unique and unusual, such as a fanciful creature or never before seen thing or place. I think the best example of this style of writing is the Bible. In the Bible there was very little description. However, Biblical creatures, such as the ones in the book of Revelations, were described in detail.
WRITING SCHEDULE
Organizing writing time is important for a writer to do. An aspiring writer should set aside time to write each day. However, the time of day to write should be considered. Some people may write best in the morning, in the afternoon, or in the evening. At these different times the creative juices flow the best for certain people. For instance, for me, my writing schedule is between 10:00 PM and 12:00AM. At that time the ideas really start to flow for me. Another thing to consider is the amount of time to spend writing. The amount of time spent writing should be based on the speed of one's thought process. If a person is a slow thinker, more time should be allocated to writing. If a person has fast thought processing, less time can be allocated to writing.
WRITER'S BLOCK
You should never force yourself to write. Let us say it is your scheduled writing time. You are sitting at your desk with pen or computer at hand ready to write, but no thoughts are flowing. Yet you want to write something. So you just start writing. Later when you read what you have written it does not make sense. So it is discarded. Forcing yourself to write can have a negative affect on the quality of your material. The results are a lot of boring rambling stuff. If you cannot think of anything to write, do not write at all.
Sometimes ideas pop into our heads throughout the day when we least expect, in a meeting at work, while driving, shopping at Wal-Mart, or 3:00AM when you wake up to use the bathroom. These new story ideas may come in sequence of the story you are writing or out of order. You cannot stop in the middle of what you are doing to work on your novel or script. If you do not record the new ideas right away you may not be able to recall them when you sit down to right. So when you are in public or at home, keep a small note pad or voice recorder with you. If you are in your car or at home busy cooking or cleaning, take up your voice recorder and speak your ideas into it. If you are in a public place where you have to be quiet and ideas come, make note of them in the note pad.
MECHANICS
When writing the first draft do not worry about mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. Just focus on getting your story idea complete. Focus on completing and improving the content. After your content is in order, then proofread for mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentences structure, etc. have an editor to read for errors. Someone who never saw the material will instantly spot the mistake. If you have completed a novel or film script, check out the Affordable Proofreading & Critique Service at http://pcsqlserviceblog.blogspot.com and contact the editor at ahicks4298@msn.com. The service this editor provided helped me out a lot and the cost was very affordable.
If you were inspired to write a book or script, whether it be true or fiction, write it. Be sure to organize yourself. Be focused, and have fun with it.
