Products to Help You Swaddle a Large Newborn Baby

S.B.
When my son was born, he was 9lbs, 4 ounces. He was a big guy at birth and continued to grow rapidly. We wanted to help our son sleep at night, but were struggling since most swaddling products were geared towards newborns weighing 6lb to 7lbs. We found some great products that helped us swaddle our big guy to dreamland and I wanted to share these products here.

If you are unfamiliar with swaddling, it is a term used to describe the way your wrap a baby in a blanket. When you swaddle a baby, you provide them with warmth, security and comfort. For many newborns being swaddled helps them to sleep and reminds them of when they were inside their mother's bodies. We wanted to provide our son with that comfort - but we couldn't at first. All of the blankets we had were not big enough to swaddle our large newborn son. We would wrap him, but the blankets would barely go around him and his feet would poke out. Even the blanket provided by the hospital was not large enough. My husband suggested using a regular blanket we had around our house, but for me, that would not work. A swaddling blanket should be lightweight so it is safe to use on baby.

We decided we would search the internet for a specialty swaddling blanket. We purchased a swaddle blanket made by Aden + Anais Company. It cost $19.99, but was worth every penny as it helped our son sleep. The blanket was perfect for what we needed. Its large size of 47" by 47" was more than big enough to swaddle our newborn son. In fact, our son is now 17lbs and almost 6 months old and we still swaddle him from time to time with this blanket! The blanket is very breathable and light, so you don't have to worry about your baby overheating. For us, this blanket made a world of difference in how our babe slept.

If you are looking for other choices to swaddle your large baby, they are a few other products on the market. You can check out the Large Swaddle Blanket, which will accommodate a baby up to twenty two pounds in size. The blanket is priced at $19.99. Another nice choice is by SwaddleDesigns. They offer a few different patterns and colors. Their blankets at 42" by 42", and are affordably priced at $14.99.

If you are the parent of a large newborn, consider purchasing a large swaddle blanket if you are tired of those tiny blankets that are impossible to swaddle. There are many products out there geared towards swaddling larger babies.
