Profanity on Daytime Talk Radio

Too Much Cussing

Mr. Chip's
At first I thought it was the proverbial "the slip of the lip can sink a ship" a saying from world war time. Then I am listening to Rush Limbaugh and I hear him drop the "H" bomb (I think you get my drift) on his show and more than once. Also he cleverly uses more profanity but just claims that he is only trying to clarify what another may have said or meant. But cussing is cussing. If I hear another use profanity and then I repeat it I am guilty also. That's what "Rush" did. Glen Beck does it too. And sadly yes I am biased (my Air America station is guilty of it) I have even heard it on my more liberal, left and progressive talk programs. I am not sure if it is happening on the television network type daytime talk shows. But right now I am focusing on talk radio. Another unfortunate spin-off is that the area I live in(Columbia SC) is starting to suffer (as I heard a local radio host Keven Cohen as well as his side-kick Dave McDougall several times keep lacing their chat with the H-bomb) meaning that some of the local talk radio personalities including music, sports and so on are starting to get I what call "potty" mouth (needing their mouth washed out with soap). So finally I have started to put my foot down. And I contacted the FCC. I knew something was afoot as far as hearing too much profanity being interlaced of late on daytime talk radio. I started wondering is the FCC privy to it. The answer is yes. And by law. They can enforce penalties to stop it. Even taking the radio stations license. I really like that. Now don't get me wrong. I may not like what Rush or Beck or Hanity has to say from an ideological stand-point. I'll in fairness give them air to say it. But I will not stand for the profanity. Even from my stations. Locally, national or abroad. Why am I so dogmatic about this issue. Recently our own Vice President, Mr. Biden dropped the F-bomb. He is the second most powerful man under the President and in the world. That is a sad commentary on our nation. What is worse. Is how many of the younger generation is being affected by all this profanity. Young people often repeat what they hear. And with children becoming smarter and smarter and more well read at a younger age. They start to understand what profanity starts to mean. And to give a possible example of an effort that is also fighting profanity. A young person in California not even in his twenties is trying to spread the word on how bad cussing is and has become. His name is McKay Hatch. He is President and Founder of the NCC (The No Cussing Club) international. Hopefully his lawmakers that are stalling his bill that should be law will institute a no cussing week. Then a no cussing month maybe The Year of No Cussing. Of course you don't want to throw someone in jail for cussing. But Mckay makes you think about the negative effects of using profanity. Especially in a academic setting. Think about it you cuss at someone and what do they say or infer. Basically those are fighting words. Or cuss at me again and see what you get? So you get fighting, hurt feelings, you get cyber fighting and it goes on and on. But when you cut down on cussing you get an almost immediate effect. Harmony, tranquility, more cooperation and more success in school, workplace community and so on. Now this won't get you to heaven but it will get you pretty close.

  • How bad has profanity become?
  • Can something be done to stop or curb it on radio?
  • What does it say about our nation and Americans?
Only recently the couple of years has cussing on the radio really become a real nuisance.
