As I started on my journey as an actor, I accepted the responsibility of becoming an observer. All the great actors have a keen ability to transform themselves into a completely different person. While this is done through pure talent, the bulk of these actors are amazing observers. They are able to take what they see in the world around them, and convert this knowledge into a unique and personalized character.
One of the most valuable tools you as an actor, and observer, can have is an observation notebook. This notebook allows you to collect, categorize and review your findings throughout daily life.
Although an observation notebook can be personalized to suit your own needs, I have included tips on how I organize my own notebook to help streamline this process.
Mannerisms
When watching those around you, take note of different mannerisms. However, don't just write down their mannerisms, but why they were doing them. What was the circumstance that called upon these mannerisms? What makes the mannerism so unique, and different? Focus on the persons face. How does their eyebrows move when they talk? What does their mouth do? Are their eyes wide or narrow when talking and listening?
Gestures
Every person has gestures that make them unique. It's like a physical fingerprint. For example, when I talk, I use my hands in very distinct ways to help make my point. When observing people, take note of their hands, how they move how they use them in conversation.
Walking/Movement
One of the most important ways of truly transforming into your character is by altering how you walk and move. We all walk differently, we all carry our bodies in a unique way. While altering how you walk and move your body can take a lot of practice, by writing out observations regarding a persons gate, how they hold their body when still, how they sit and how they run can help you mold and shape yourself into a completely different character.
