Ballroom dancing has always been popular, but lately it has been infused with even more vigor and interest because of the increasing popularity of Latin styles over the past several decades. Some traditional ballroom dance instructors teach a wide variety of Latin styles and even incorporate them into their basic ballroom lessons. Latin styles like the Rumba, Samba, Mambo, and Tango have been invigorated by the new salsa and merengue styles. All are upbeat, use plenty of hip action and have a lot of twirling floor movement. Philadelphia is a great place to be if you want to take lessons from really expert instructors. There are plenty of them in the area.

Top Hat Dance Studio is a relatively recent addition to the Philadelphia dance scene. It's run by Robert Finnochio and his very fine staff of professional dancers. They teach group and private lessons, with bi-monthly practice parties and wedding instruction for the important reception dancing. They have not updated their calendar yet on the web site, so interested persons will need to contact the school directly by phone if they need pricing and schedule information for the dates that interest them. They teach basic ballroom, the Hustle, and West Coast Swing. No mention of any salsa here, but ask when you call. They do teach Cuban techniques.

The University of Pannsylvania's Dansport classes are gearing up now, although the schedule is not ready yet. The cost is just $20 for a class card for group lessons this summer, which is a good way to begin. They take non-students in their classes. They emphasize that neither a partner or experience is required. Go to the web site and click on the Social Listserve link to be informed of the information when it's completed. Dance Sport Academy is an artistic dance instruction in both classic ballroom and the rhythm ballroom of Latin dance forms. Students are given the skills to dance competitively and to choreograph their own dances. There's a link on their site for receiving a complimentary 30-minute dance evaluation to decide the level and type of instruction you will need. They do teach new students who are just learning beginning styles and techniques as well as more experienced dancers. They have private lessons available, and lessons for children. There is a contact form on the web site, but the information is also below. No prices are given on the web site, so those interested need to contact them to get an evaluation and discuss fees.

The Academy of Ballroom Dance is obviously specialized in teaching the most varied forms of ballroom and, like Dance Sport, they also require a free evaluation for all students to assess their level and instructional needs. They offer several different starter courses for those who have completed the evaluation dance session. No classes are given without this.
