Bamboo Plant Nurseries in Alabama

Gwyn Guess
Bamboo is becoming a very popular landscaping plant these days. Its sturdiness and beauty characterize it as a good background or specimen planting and it is also increasingly used as a screen or living fence. Bamboo has been a mainstay for building in Asia for many centuries. Foundations, siding, roofs, and framing are more often than not made of bamboo. People even wear bamboo on their feet. This remarkable plant has been used as scaffolding for buildings in Japan and China. It has much more tinsel strength than hardwood or pine. And now there are more and more companies importing bamboo as an alternative to hardwood flooring. I have looked at several companies in the Georgia area who carry the plants in containers to sell to the public or to landscapers, and found some that had excellent stocks and many varieties.

They have a $150 minimum order requirement for any visit to their nursery, so it's really important to do a little research first on their web site and others to compare prices. Take a look at the pictures, descriptions and recommendations for each of the plants that seem likely purchases. He has over 100 species on 25 acres of property. They guarantee all plants for 30 days within receiving them. The plants contain 1 to 3 canes and the rootballs vary with the number of canes. This nursery does do shipping and their quoted prices include shipping prices. Container sizes are from 9.5" to 11.5" diameter. All of his plants cost between $60 and $90. This is a fascinating web site with so much information. He also sells a lot of cold-hardy plants for area gardeners who just love a tropical look. The nursery is just about 25 miles from Birmingham. Definitely call them to find out if these bamboos he sells are running or clumping.

Lewis offers a 30-day from delivery guarantee, but the unwanted plant must be shipped back to them UPS ground within that time frame. Of their stock of over 125 varieties they only have 20 clumping varieties, so know this before shopping. The company was the first in Alabama to offer bamboo orders over the internet and they have pictures on the site of large commercial areas that have ordered from them, including the Memphis and Atlanta Zoos, and the New Orleans Audubon Zoo; they have also been featured on Fox News. They accommodate on site tours because their farm is so large, but visits are only made with prior appointment. They provide directions to the nursery once an appointment has been made.

Steve Ray's Bamboo Garden is located near Birmingham also.

Steve Ray's web site has a map locating them but it's somewhat difficult to make out
so call them after picking out some varieties on their web site. This is a 40-yr. old company with over 100 varieties on 50 acres. Some of their plants cost as little as $15, and most are $35 and under. There's an order form on the site for downloading and numerous pictures that are very well laid out. They do not have a special grouping for clumping bamboo. Their gallery has some really unusual pictures that can give people some new ideas about what will look good in their gardens.
