Professional Clowns: A Guide to Becoming Self-Employed

SDR2010
Last summer, I was looking for work, but I found that most jobs were very low-paying, and so I did not see a benefit to working a low-paying job; I would still not have any money at the end of the week, and I would be very tired. I knew that I liked spending time with children and making them smile, so I knew that I could do something with children and not feel too stressed. So I decided to attempt to get work as a clown because it pays very well and is also a lot of fun. This is an easy job to do if you follow a few simple steps.

First you will need to get a clown costume because the most important part to being a clown is looking funny for the children. You will spend a bit of money on this but you need to spend money in order to make it so you should buy the best professional clown costume that you can buy on your budget. I purchased my costume from here http://www.lynchs.com/item--Adult-Dots-The-Clown-Costume--3250.html but you will also need to buy the wig through that site because it does not come with the costume.

Once you do this you should buy some face paint, which you can find at your local dollar store. I got mine at Toys R Us because the paint was thicker and I found that it stayed on better than less expensive versions. You will also need to buy an accessory like balls, balloons or batons to juggle during your appearance. In my case I purchased balloons because all I needed to do was play with them to make the children happy. I got mine from here http://www.lynchs.com/item--Animal-Modeling-Balloons--3205.html and made 20 balloons during every show which means that the 144 included lasted me about a week of shows.

Once you have this down you should run an advertisement in your local paper and put signs in the street saying you are a clown for hire. I stood out with a sign and I got hired to do two gigs the same day. On average I would make 100 for two hours, which was a lot more than anything I could have made somewhere else. As long as you get the word out about your business parents will be willing to hire you.

Do clowns still have to trademark or register their faces? Do they need a degree?
