Oklahoma City is like many others today, becoming more violent and more congested. With the tremendous influx of illegal aliens and the large increase in violent gangs-especially those from south of the border-we're all in greater danger than ever before. Conditions in our schools has deteriorated to the point of being absolutely reprehensible. In some metro areas, instructors are afraid to reprimand violent and abusive students because of fear of lawsuits and the once-noble ACLU has turned to protecting the socially aberrant much more often than the ordinary citizen. All these factors have led to a society that feels more dangerous and, in fact, is. It's becoming apparent to many people that their only protection is going to be themselves. That means learning strategies, safety measures to take in daily life, and then training in some type of self-defense. Fortunately, this growing demand for training like this has spawned classes at universities, and small businesses like kung-fu studios and their like.

Oklahoma State University has some on-going courses which teach people to get fit, loose weight, exercise and learn some basic self-defense. Their classes are available for members of the Colvin Recreation Center. The memberships are available for the staff and faculty of the college and for all alumni. One of the classes being taught this spring, 2007, is Combat Solutions. This teaches students a number of blended techniques from martial arts, including tae kwon do, boxing and kickboxing. A kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a class teaching some different forms of striking and grappling. Finally, they have a Tae Kwon Do class that teaches students in Korea's national martial art. Troy Cheatwood teaches "a safe and family-oriented Martial Arts experience for students of all ages." He offers something a little different too-a 30-day, money-back offer of classes so that people can see if his program is helping their children. Self-improvement through "focused training" is the stated goal of this school and they cater to all age groups. He has an interesting class on extreme self-defense for women so they can protect themselves from attackers, rapists, and criminals. It's a course designed around the realities of the street and public areas today. He also offers a free anti-child's kidnapping seminar and women's self-defense seminar every other month. This is definitely a place that all people should call and visit for more information. Try out the 30-day offer, too. If you don't like it, use the money-back guarantee. The Windsong School is one of the oldest martial arts schools in Oklahoma City and it has a very unique philosophy. The student-teacher relationship is paramont and to that end everyone pays on the honor system. They request that people who cannot pay, withdraw in a timely manner. They teach Judo and Aikido primarily and some very advanced techniques. They ask that you call to inquire about the tuition for classes and which discipline interests you. Windsong Dojo/ 2201 N.W.
