Pictures are important for documenting important moments in your life, especially if you have a family. What family doesn't treasure its family photo album that can be flipped through to remember all the years that have been spent together? And since these photos are meant to capture special moments to remember it's important that they be good quality and made to last throughout the years to come. For what good are pictures that you can't keep forever? There are two types of pictures that you can take: homemade ones on your own camera or professional ones at a professional photography studio. There are pros and cons to both options.

Just about everybody snaps their own pictures on their own cameras, whether they be digital cameras, disposable cameras, or traditional cameras. Some advanced homemade photographers have their own professional cameras. However, these people often studied photography at a college or university as well. The obvious pro to homemade photography is that it is much cheaper than professional photography. Plus, you can snap your own photos any time without an appointment. However, a drawback is that you have to do all of the work yourself. You have to take the photo, have the photo developed, edit and print the photo yourself if you have a digital camera, etc. In addition, if you print your own photos at home, you must purchase the correct photo paper so that it will last and the color ink as well, which can become a bit costly over time. Moreover, oftentimes homemade photos are not near as nicely looking as professional photography.

Professional photography is very good quality since it is done by professionals. You can get movie-star quality photos of yourself and your family. However, it is usually quite expensive compared to homemade pictures. Yet, all of the work is done for you and of a good quality made to endure. On the other hand, it can also be a chore having to set special appointments and get everybody together to have these taken. Plus, you don't get near as many random, action-filled everyday shots as you do with homemade photography.

There are pros and cons to both homemade photography and professional photography. The compromise that most people seem to draw is a mixture between the two. Most people snap lots of various homemade photos of their own and get together and have a professional shoot once or twice a year. Whichever method best suits you and your family is dependent upon your personal preference and photography needs. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages to both choices.
