Professional Wrestler 'Macho Man' Randy Savage Dies in Car Accident at Age 58

At about 9:25 AM today in Tampa, Florida, 58-year-old Randy Savage suffered a heart attack while driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler resulting in his losing of the vehicle, which crossed a concrete median through oncoming traffic, and finally colliding head-on with a tree. He died from injuries after being transported to Largo Medical center. His wife, Lynn, with whom Randy celebrated his one-year anniversary earlier this month, was a passenger in the vehicle but only treated for minor injuries.

An early investigation shows that both Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident and that alcohol was not a contributing factor. Further investigation is ongoing.

Savage married his long time girlfriend, Lynn Payne on May 10, 2010, and the couple recently celebrated their one-year anniversary. He has no children and is survived by his younger brother, Lanny Poffo, who was also a professional wrestler using the ring names of "The Genius" and "Leaping Lanny Poffo."

Lynn was Savage's second marriage and his first marriage was to Elizabeth Ann Hulette, who he married on December 30, 1984. She was famous for being his valet in the WWF using the name Elizabeth. They separated and divorced in 1992. She was found dead in Lex Luger's home from a drug overdose in 2003.

Born Randall Mario Poffo, Savage was a second-generation professional wrestler to his father Angelo Poffo was popular wrestler in the 1950s and 1960s. He began his athletic career as a minor league baseball outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago White Sox farm teams. He began his professional wrestling career in 1973 as "The Spider Friend" and later took the ring name Randy Savage at the suggestion of Georgia Championship Wrestling booker, Ole Anderson.

He did not rise to be a superstar until he joined the WWF in 1985. He wrestled in for the WWF as 'Macho Man' Randy Savage for 9 years where he became a seven-time world champion. He left the WWF in 1994 to wrestle for WCW until 1999 and finally wrestled in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling from 2004 until 2005 when he retired.

'Macho Man' Randy Savage left an indelible mark as professional wrestling superstar for which he will be forever remembered along with his spokesperson role for Slim Jim meat snacks "Ooooh yeaahhh."
