Profitable Home Based Business Ideas for 2009

The American economy right now is in terrible shape and it is getting worse by the month, as more and more people lose their jobs and their source of income. The world economy isn't doing any better as a complete global recession takes hold. The unfortunate thing is that so many people are losing a job that puts the meals on their tables for their families and even the governments in each state don't have enough money to pay unemployment benefits. In this kind of an economy, one of the only options for some people is to take the reigns themselves and start a home based business. How can that be done in such a rough economy? In which areas can starting a home based business be profitable? Those are the questions I will look at in this article.

First of all, why start a home based business when the economy is so poor? There are several strong reasons to consider it. The fact that you are able to control the hours that you work and are flexible to work around your family's needs are very important. The control that you give yourself in a home based business is unprecedented. I think it is very refreshing to know that you are reporting yourself alone and that there is no one else to blame if it goes wrong rather then yourself. The responsibility is huge, but the opportunities are large as well.

In this kind of economy what type of home based businesses can be profitable? It is a very good idea to look at business types and sectors that will always do well no matter the economic situation. For example, the medical health care industry will continue to grow despite the downturn in the economy because baby boomers must take care of themselves. On the other hand, a discretionary business such as selling electronics or games may take a hard hit during an economic downturn.

What other areas are ripe for starting a home based business? Look into green home based businesses. People are taking the environment and its issues much more seriously, and the boom in green businesses is still in its infancy. Another area that is hot is pet care home based businesses. Things such as pet sitting businesses or doggy daycares are wildly popular right now. Freelance work such as freelance writing or photography is another area that does well in a down economy because employers downsize their writing staff and hire more freelance workers. As I said earlier, things in the health care industry will continue to be strong as well. Ideas in the health care industry include a medical transcription business or a medical billing business.

Starting a home based business during a recession is difficult, but it is still possible to be profitable. Put the hard work into it and you are likely to be rewarded nicely!
