Simply stated dropped domain names are those that have been previously registered however the owner has chosen to not renew the registration. Because of this non payment of the renewal fees these domain names are made available once again to the open market. This return to the open market takes place about 45 days after the domain names expiration date.
One of the main aspects employed by those who engage in this very profitable strategy is to inexpensively obtain the automated tools required to track the thousands of dropped domain name registrations and abandoned websites that are removed from the domain registry. Literally thousands of these dropped names become available for purchase on a daily basis. For the most part these expired and dropped domain name registrations and the traffic associated with them have been only available to those who have automated systems and tools in place.
It has not been until recently that these tools and systems are becoming more widely available. This is an important development because these automated tools and resources make quick and easy work of identifying, appraising and even buying these dropped domain names.
Many previously registered and owned domain names even point to fully functioning websites while many others are registered simply for speculation. These names are registered by speculators in the hope of obtaining a profit on the resale of the domain name.
A great number of domain names are registered yearly by individuals with the full intent of developing websites however for whatever their reasons never quite get around to website development. In a certain number of these cases, the domain name owners simply allow their ownership of the particular domain name to expire.
Another method being widely used to generate revenue from dropped domain names happens through the realization that there are a number of dropped domain names with fully functioning websites that are still receiving daily traffic from the search engines, links and previously placed banner ads. The expired domain names that get this daily traffic can earn substantial revenues for those who locate them and redirected this traffic to another website or affiliate program.
Profiting with dropped domain names is indeed a live, and very competitive marketplace.
