Programs and Resources for Living with Autism in Alaska

Reina Brown
Alaska seems to be a barren place, as everything is spaced out, and there are scattered villages. Many have even drawn the conclusion that Alaska does not have much to offer. Though Alaska may seem to be a place that lacks in many areas, there are still a number of wonderful programs and resources for autism that provide assistance and support for those living with the condition that will enable them to better cope and enjoy a better quality of life. Autistic citizens of this state are not left out in the cold. As a matter of fact, they are well taken care of, as these programs and resources reach to the very ends of the Alaskan territory.

The first of the programs and resources for Autism in Alaska is the Autism Society of Alaska. The Autism Society of Alaska is a wonderful resource for both Autistic children and adults, as they not only provide a wide range of support services, they can also steer Autistic individuals and their loved ones in the right direction for receiving the services that are necessary for an improved life. If you need to get in touch with the Autism Society of Alaska for more information, you can give them a call at 1-800-3autism. It is that simple.

The second of the programs and resources for autism in Alaska is the Centers for Psychosocial Development, which is located at 2210 Arca Drive, Anchorage, AK 99508. Here, Autistic individuals can not only receive evaluations, but they can also receive support from varying types of therapists, depending upon what is needed. Should you want more information, you'll need to contact MS. Karen Ward, who is the director, at 907-272-8270.

The third of the programs and resources for Autism in Alaska is for residents in Burrow, and it is the North Slope Borough. This is a wonderful resource for Autistic individuals of all ages. Families can obtain the support that they need, and Autistic individuals who are capable of living on their own will be able to do so, as they will be put in the proper direction to receive the necessary services for continuing independence. More information can be obtained through calling 800-478-6606 ext. 264, and the contact person is Susan Rinker. Furthermore, residents of Burrow can contact the Developmental Disabilities Division of the Department of Social Services for further support and programs that the North Slope Borough does not offer.

If any person should live in a part of Alaska where there are not any specific programs available, they can contact the Department of Social Services in their area. The Department of Social Services will direct them to early intervention programs, therapy and support services that are necessary for maintaining the quality of life for the Autistic individual. Nobody is left out.
