Progresso Southwestern Chicken - Product Review

Nicole A.
Each can of Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup is described as having two cup-size servings. The soup also has a "No MSG Added" label on the front, possibly to compete with Campbell's Soup Select Harvest product line.

Health
Progresso Southwestern Chicken Soup is part of their traditional soup product line and relatively healthy. This Progresso can soup has 120 calories and only 2 grams of fat per serving. Each can of Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup is described as having two cup size servings. The soup also has a "No MSG Added" label on the front, which seems to be a new development after Campbell's Soup advertised their Select Harvest product line. I have not noticed these MSG labels on Progresso soup cans before and have purchased dozens of their products.

Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup does not appear to have a lot of nutritional value beyond its 6 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber (10%) and 400 milligrams (3%) of potassium. I was disappointed to find out that Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup is high in sodium. The 740 milligrams of sodium in this can soup makes up a whopping 30% per serving. The sodium count causes this particular Progresso soup offering to lose points in the health category.

Quality
Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup includes corn, tomatoes, sweet peppers, white chicken meat, onions, black beans and rice. These main ingredients are served in a chicken broth with other seasonings. This Progresso can soup flavor was more filling than I expected. The main ingredients are plentiful including the chicken, which makes for a satisfactory balance between the food and broth. I removed some of the chicken in this Progresso can soup because most of it looked fake. There is enough food in one can to feed one adult and one child but may be the right amount for hungry adults who are dieting.

Price and Taste Test
Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup costs between $2.49 and $2.89 at some grocery stores. I found it on sale at one Pathmark for $1.25, making it an affordable lunch or dinner choice. The can soup is not too expensive unless you plan on eating it everyday. I expected the soup to be hot or spicy after reading "Southwestern" in its product label. While Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup is very flavorful, there are not any indications of strong spices that need bread or water to accompany them. Instead, Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup tastes very good and may even be kid-friendly.

Overall Rating
These soups are loaded with more food than some other Progresso soups including the minestrone soup and vegetable soup. Progresso Southwestern Chicken soup can also be obtained on small budgets, making it a good deal for the money. It is a great tasting soup that I felt guilty of skipping during previous shopping trips. This can soup flavor is worth a try and you can eve get it on sale, making the product an attractive purchase.
