Progresso Traditional Chicken & Herb Dumpling Soup

Lunch Time in a Can

After surveying the refrigerator this morning looking for leftovers to take to work today, I discovered that I was out of luck. Gone were the au gratin potatoes and taco meat so off to the cupboard looking for something that might make due for the day. So after rummaging around I settled on a can of Progresso Traditional Chicken & Herb Dumpling Soup.

Upon opening the can for lunch I noticed that the broth is of a nice yellowish color with a little fat sitting on top, not a solid layer but some oil either added of from the chicken pieces itself. After pouring the soup into a microwave safe bowl and stirring the parsley and chives flakes are noticeably visible and abundant.

Now after following directions with microwaving the soup I first notice that there is very little aroma coming from the steaming soup. After cooling slightly my first taste tells me that this is definitely lacking flavor. Very low salt flavor and needs pepper. I find it hard to believe that the soup would be lacking salt due to the whole can having 66% of your daily value for sodium.

Now for the texture:

Carrots - Nice size pieces, however mushy

Chicken - The pieces are larger than I expected, however they appear to be quite have grizzle and fatty strips throughout them. Taste just as expected, not much seasoning due to the broth and rather tough to chew.

Dumplings - (Spaetzle style) Again, lacking in flavor and have a soggy, pasty texture to them.

The can does note 100 calories per 1 cup serving and is www.bestlife.com approved. However in my own personal opinion, there are better options out there for canned soup, even low calorie ones. In fact I wouldn't recommend purchasing this soup unless you can find it in a 10 for $10 sale and then keep the salt and pepper handy to add flavor.

My love of cooking began early on and expanded (along with my waist) as I grew older. I have a weekly newsletter/recipe that has well over 100 people on the mailing list. Hopefully my good sense of humor...  View profile

I have to agree, Progresso soups are by far the worst. I can't eat them.
