Project Natal: Microsoft's Gaming Revolution

C.B. Jones
Microsoft's Project Natal is the newest innovation in video games that promises to enhance the gaming experience. Using a camera (and other non-traditional peripherals), players can control characters and interact with objects that appear in their favorite video games.

Project Natal is not a completely original idea. It's more of a step forward of two ideas that have already hit the market. Project Natal is a combination of Sony's Eye Toy(underused PS2 peripheral) and the Wii remote control concept.

From what I saw from the live demo's during Microsoft's press conference, Project Natal is a huge step forward in motion control gameplay. There will be no need for a wand or nunchuck. Actions on screen are controlled by your movements in front of a camera plugged into the Xbox 360.

The whole idea behind Project Natal is to eliminate the "barrier" keeping some people from enjoying video games. While I don't agree in a controller scaring anyone away from playing, I can understand wanting to make the experience more interactive for everyone. Interactivity is good.

There are plenty of fun Wii games that would be down right boring with a traditional push button controller. If Nintendo make a sports compilation for Gamecube in the vain of Wii Sports, I doubt It would have helped move units for that particular system. Wii Sports was a killer application for Nintendo Wii, only because of motion control.

Microsoft needs their killer app for this to work out. They can't just release a mini game compilation and hope for the best. An interactive version of Microsoft paint won't get everybody excited. They need to create a full fledged game and actually encourage third party developers to contribute as well.

This is where Sony went wrong with Eye Toy. They didn't fully support the blasted thing, and neither did any of the major third party developers. Aside from releasing a compilation disc with a bunch of tech demos on it, there was nothing of note released that had an Eye Toy insignia on the Playstation 2.

I think Microsoft can really bring forth some sort of revolution with Project Natal. I think this brings us one step closer to virtual reality. At some point, no console's proprietary control scheme will involve pushing buttons on a controller. It will have to be something different because gamers will demand more from the video gaming experience.
