Project Runway Season 8 Finale: Was Mondo Guerra Robbed of the Win?

R. M. Dubuc
Fans of Project Runway were thrown a curve ball last night as the eighth season came to an end, crowning Gretchen Jones the winner. Mondo Guerra, who won the hearts of many fans with his creative vision and appealing sincerity, were left shaking their heads at the outcome.

Admittedly, Project Runway has been one of my must-see shows for the past eight seasons. Thursday nights have been set aside to marvel at some the talent and creativity that many of the Project Runway contestants bring to the competition. Clearly Gretchen Jones has talent, but Mondo Guerra's boldness and genius is what won over many fans this season. The fan support has even led to Facebook groups now forming to protest, banning L'Oreal, Garnier, and future viewing of Project Runway. Mando Guerra's own fan page is now filled with fan comments regarding the outcome.

The judges' decision making process was almost painful to watch last night, as Michael Kors and Nina Garcia suddenly became strong advocates for Gretchen Jones, repeatedly rallying on about the ready-to-wearness of the collection and how she was the future of fashion. Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson strongly advocated for Mondo Guerra, frequently calling out Kors and Garcia for their insistance on now saying Mondo Guerra's creativity was too over-the-top, though they once praised this very boldness. Both Jessica Simpson and Heidi Klum wanted to wear Mondo Guerra's polka dot evening gown.

Jessica Simpson had a pained expression on her face throughout most of the judging, clearly uncomfortable with the Kors-Garcia alliance and their dismissal of nearly every positive comment said regarding Mondo Guerra's collection. Heidi Klum seemed surprised at the tension, at one point asking if someone could bring her some boxing gloves.

In the end, Gretchen Jones was named winner. Mondo Guerra, however, is far from being a runner up. His collection was exactly like his designs througout the season, consistently bold, with a real talent for mixing prints and creating stand out clothing. Like many of the second place winners of the once popular, American Idol Guerra's fan base may just catapult him to the top, independent of any endorsement win by Project Runway.

Heidi did not fight against Gretchen hard enough and I have not seen her say a word in Mondo's favor since the final show. This looks very bad since one of the judges in favor of Mondo had to change their vote in order for Gretchen to win. Please explain to the fans how this happened if Heidi did not change her vote.

Watching the finale of project runway, Mondo's collection took my breath away... But when Gretchen was named the winner I was so disappointed and shocked! It hurt me to see the judges put wear-ability over art.

I am 20 years old, and I absolutely ADORE Mondo's clothes! I bought several looks before they sold out! YAY! :DDD
I didn't like Gretchen's line at ALL! They all just seemed kind of... boring and bland...
Actually, I would've enjoyed seeing Michael C's collection.
And FYI, I have NEVER seen any of the judges dressed in something that remotely resembles Gretchen's clothing. :/

I am a 53 yr old female and was a Mondo fan from start to finish. Gretchen's line is depressing...Mondo's line inspiring. Just my humble opinion!

Show should be renamed "Project PIPERLIME" -- http://jesscscott.wordpress.com/2010/10/29/project-runway-gretchen-fail/

Mondo was DEFINITELY robbed! He has sold ALL of his pieces! SOLD OUT!
    Andy has sold 4 pieces!
And the "winner"? She has sold 1.

Mondo was robbed. UNLESS, the new couture is for Navajo-pattern-loving, middle-aged ladies, who like to wear jewelry that's bigger than their heads. Watch out, Chico's and Target Merona, you've got some competition!!

Gretchen didn't deserve to make it to the final three- her clothes are not clothes American women want to wear (could you ever see Heidi or Nina walking down the street in any of her clothes???). No doubt, Mondo should have won, but even Andy would have been a better choice. Michael C. should have make it to the final three instead of Gretchen- she make a collection for Woodstock not for NY fashion week.

Mondo was robbed. And Gretchen is a back-stabbing, mean-spirited person. She is on camera in many episodes telling a contestant that his/her work is wonderful, and then they cut to a private interview where she trashes both the clothes and the designer. Whether or not I like her clothes is immaterial (no pun intended). Even more important, I don't like Gretchen's character. My grandmother used to say, "You are only what you are when nobody's looking." Gretchen is a back-stabber.
