Pro-Life Man's Murder - "Mainstream Media" Still Silent

Another Example of Politically Prejudiced Media?

Sheryl Young
Please note: This article does not minimize the horrendous murder of abortion provider George Tiller. Pro-life conservatives and sincere Christians have condemned Tiller's murder as a senseless, unjustified act of violence.

Last month, on the anniversary of 9/11, pro-life activist Jim Pouillon attended a peaceful abortion protest across the street from Owosso High School in Owosso, Michigan. Pouillon was a disabled man and was seated in his wheelchair. Witnesses were shocked to see a car drive by, fire four shots at Pouillon, and race away. These shots resulted in Pouillon's death.

First instinct by the authorities was to consider this a "random" shooting. However, witnesses had noted the car's license plate. When the driver, Harlan Drake was found, he admitted to being offended at Pouillon's graphic protest sign. Drake is now in custody, apparently having admitted to killing Pouillon as well as killing another person known to him, Mike Fuosso, earlier that day.

Yet news of Pouillon's murder was for the most part only seen or heard on conservative blogs and news programs, whereas the months-earlier murder of Kansas' main abortion provider, George Tiller, resulted in an immediate media circus with nearly never-ending coverage at the "Big Three" - ABC, NBC and CBS. A look at Reuter's catalog of articles about Pouillon's murder shows only one "mainstream" media source, CNN, to have articles covering the murder. CNN identified Pouillon as "anti-abortion" before or after each mention of his name. If pro-choicers ask to be called "pro-choice," not pro-abortion, then perhaps it would have been fair to label Pouillon "pro-life" instead of "anti-abortion."

Was George Tiller's murder actually considered more newsworthy or more tragic by the media than Jim Pouillon's?

The capital punishment/abortion dilemma:
The media takes every opportunity to announce that pro-lifers are hypocritical for being against abortion while favoring capital punishment. Not all pro-lifers are pro-capital punishment, but many are. Here is an explanation of the pro-capital punishment view in several points from a number of pro-life people this writer has polled:

-Capital punishment is government sentencing in a court of law on a defendant who has been found without a doubt to be responsible for murdering an innocent victim. Those who believe "Vengeance is the Lord's" may also belive that God, in His wisdom, sets up governments and grants them judgment privileges.

-The defendant committed either a willful, pre-meditated act of murder or a crime of passion.

-Unborn babies have not committed any crimes. Therefore, they have more of a reason to be granted life than the criminal found guilty of murder.

-However, most true and tender hearted Christians do not believe abortive mothers should be considered "murderers." It's not a proper judgment call because most abortive mothers don't realize what they're doing-due to subjective opinions and medical advice about when human life begins, their emotional condition at the time, and/or other misinformation.

The snubbing of Pouillon's murder by mainstream media could be considered another indication of their bias in favor of only politically correct causes.

Killin a pro life guy is cool and all. How dare anyone want to interfere with a woman's right to her own body? Ahhh, is it just me, or shouldn't this be investigated as a hate crime? Nice work, as usual Sheryl!

I looked at the signs he was carrying and while they were graphic, they were honest depictions of what abortion looks like. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Its sad that some people decided that others should die because of their beliefs.

Anytime a person is murdered for his or her political stance, it is important.

You're correct Sheryl: being pro-life should be a discussed choice that the mainstream media discusses with civility.

Tyler, Ron: The reasons why Drake killed Fuosso seems to be a business vendetta Drake was angry over. According to reports, Drake (as stated in my article) did admit killing Pouillon over the anti-abortion sign he was carrying. I still believe the main reason for no reports by "mainstream" media is due to the fact that Pouillon was politically incorrect with his pro-life stance and the MSM is against pro-lifers....although if you're going to tout being "pro-choice", isn't life a choice?

Sheryl, Ron Amos posed a couple of excellent questions in his comment which I believe you addressed, but if you would like to clarify.

Hi, Sheryl. I hadn't heard about this news story. I'm a little sickened to see 2 good friends of mine being ripped to shreds in the comments section here. :(
