Prom Music Playlist Ideas: Top 10 Slow Dance Prom Songs

When it comes to dance parties, there are certain songs which I consider an ultimate requirement to dance to. Whether it be at a middle school dance, a Christmas formal, or the senior prom, these songs fit and make these events complete. While there are many more choices that are at the top of my list, I had to narrow it down to the best of the best. The following includes my take on the 10 best songs to add to a prom play list:

10. My Whole Life Has Changed- Ginuwine

This song made my top 10 list simply because every time I hear it I recall those sixth grade dances where I was standing on one side of the room, hoping and praying that the boy I was crushing on at the moment would come ask me to dance. This is that song for me, the one that I stood listening to for many dances until that one where I was finally able to be in the arms of someone who loved me. This is a great song for Prom, because it talks about how someone new has come into your life and changed it. While the song is referring to a significant other, it can be turned into viewing it as friends who have come into your life throughout high school. Each of us has that person, or those people who entered our lives during high school made a huge impact on who we turned out to be. The friends that we bonded with and the cliques that we formed were what changed our lives, literally.

9.I'm Already There- Lonestar

I love this song because it depicts a situation where a loved one is far away, but he gives his family the chance to perceive him being by their side. Mentioned in this song are that the man is, "the sunshine in your hair," "the shadow on the ground," and "the whisper in the wind." While the song is referring to a husband and father away on business, the words can be turned into so much more. Thinking of this song makes me look around and imagine where all of my high school friends are right now. Even though they can't be with me at this moment, I know that because of the strong relationships we formed, they will always be with me in spirit. The beauty of the words in this song are that they give you hope that your loved ones are near, and there is no better feeling at prom than knowing that at that moment in time, you really are right there with all of your closest friends.

8.You Got it Bad- Usher

"You Got it Bad" is one of my favorite songs to slow dance to, and I believe that it always will be. This song evokes emotions in everyone, because when listening to it, it is impossible not to remember those feelings you got when you had that first real crush. Everyone has experienced it, that moment when nothing else matters but the one person you have your eyes set on. You want to spend every moment with them, give them everything, and just be where they are. Most likely, the majority of these feelings in adolescents occurred during high school years, which is why it is a great song to play at the senior prom.

7.Back At One- Brian Mcknight

How could you go to any type of get together or party without slow dancing to this song? "Back At One" literally puts us all back to that first moment when we realized we had someone special or wanted them. This song is inspiring to any young couple, and has been around for a pretty long time. Prom is a time to look back on old memories, and it is a time to admire what you have. By starting "back at one," you can relive the moments that brought you true happiness, and acknowledge the good things in your life.

6.All My Life- K-Ci & JoJo

Once again, this song is the typical slow dance party song. Just like number 10 on my list, "All my Life" takes me back to those sixth grade parties where I just wanted one special guy to ask me to dance. Finally, after years of frustration, I met that one guy, and to be able to look into his eyes at my high school prom while dancing to this song was remarkable. At that moment, I felt like I was part of the song, and every word remained true. I wanted my boyfriend to know that I had been waiting for someone like him, and I do thank God that I finally found him.

5.Amazed- Lonestar

The title pretty much explains it all for this one. When dancing to this song, there is only one true way to express yourself: you feel "amazing." The melody of this one allows two people to move together gracefully and perfectly. I think that this song is special for many couples, and it absolutely should be a prom hit.

4.I Don't Want to Miss a Thing- Aerosmith

Simply put, this song says it all. Though it is normally viewed as a song about a relationship, it can be interpreted as much more than that. When I hear this song, I think about my boyfriend, but I also think about my friends and loved ones. I think it can be said for everyone, that we don't want to miss out on the opportunities or the chances to do great things. Every little moment that we get with those dear to us is precious, and I think that too often we take that for granted. When dancing to this song at Prom, surrounded by your closest friends, it is great to just think about the many times you have spent together, and the many more that you will hopefully get to witness. This song does hit home for many though, because they know that there will be much to miss out on as everyone goes there separate ways.

3.Graduation (Friends Forever)- Vitamin C

This leads us to the next great Prom slow song. I think that this song is probably already a part of every graduation ceremony, but if not, it should absolutely be played at the Prom. The words in this song are basically directed at students who are graduating and branching off in different directions. It states that even though everyone's lives will be changing, they are going to hold on to their friendship. No matter what happens, or where everyone goes, they will always be friends. For me, this song was very special. There were countless times near the end of high school where my friends and I would sit together and sing this song repeatedly to each other, teary-eyed and filled with sorrow, yet excited about the world that awaited us.

2.My Wish- Rascal Flatts

"My Wish" is a great song, and is just as it says. It is every person's own wish for their loved ones who are starting a new chapter in life. The lyrics of this song lead you to wish that all of your friends' dreams might come true, and that they have success in life. This song just came out in the past few years, and it was played at my high school Prom. I can recall hearing it and not even realizing that the words would be so true for me, personally. At that moment when you're dancing side by side with all of your closest peers, you really do tend to take it all for granted. All of the laughs and the memories that you have shared with the people who mean the most to you are really coming to an end. This song gives you the opportunity to wish them the best in every endeavor that they take on.

1.It's Your Love- Tim McGraw

Finally, the song that I believe should be the number one Prom slow song, is my personal favorite, "It's Your Love." I guess I am biased, because this is the song that was playing right before my current boyfriend of over three years told me that he loved me. No, it wasn't at prom, but it was still remarkable. However, without taking into account that I am biased, I truly believe that this is one of the greatest songs of all time. It is a beautiful love song, and I view it as so genuine and pure. Yes, it is a song for lovers, and it is the best way to wrap up your senior prom. How incredible would it be to walk out of your prom after dancing to this song with someone you loved, whether it be your boyfriend, girlfriend, or just a best friend. This song triggers so many deep emotions, and it really does touch your heart. I believe that it is a great slow song for Prom, and the truth of its word will never fade.
