Introduction

This article is intended to give the reader an idea of the history and culture of Wilkes-Barre and Luzerne County Pennsylvania. The area has a rich history and is full of strong traditions and celebrations. We have a collection of articles that will give readers a good understanding for the history, culture, traditions, and celebrations in the area. The articles are listed at the end of this essay, and readers are encouraged to read any that may be of interest. Many of the events and festivals that are popular here can be duplicated in just about any community. We hope these articles can add something to the history and culture of your area.

Pennsylvania's motto is you have a friend in Pennsylvania, and the people of Luzerne County live this motto every day. The people of Luzerne County are known for their friendliness and hospitality. It is probably the last place one would expect to find corruption and scandal and yet it is here on a grand scale. Luzerne County has been in the news in the last couple of years as one of the greatest scandals in human history is unfolding before our very eyes. Yet the people endure, the traditions and the culture continues, and there are many human interests stories of people helping people to choose from. I choose this story as it effects the safety of so many children.

Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn

There are many interesting things to do in Luzerne County, and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and this is especially true on the Fourth of July. It is an area that has many proud institutions and traditions. There are also many great lawyers and law firms in Luzerne County, and this year one of the great law firms is doing something special on the Fourth of July. The law firm of Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn has a Fund for Children's Advocacy which is also known as HKQ Kids. The fund promotes child safety.

The Fourth of July

This year HKQ KIds will give away 1,200 bicycle helmets to area children during the July 4 fireworks demonstration at Kirby Park. HKQ Kids will have a booth at the celebration and give 1,200 helmets to eligible children free of charge. The booth will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Children must be 12 or under and must be accompanied by an adult to obtain a helmet. Over the past three years, HKQ Kids has given bike helmets to 2,640 children in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The free helmets meet U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards, and each helmet comes with a user's manual and CPSC label of certification.

History

HKQ Kids was established in October 2005 by the law firm to promote child safety through community outreach and educational programs. The fund is administered by the Luzerne Foundation.
