Prop 8 the Musical

Sabrina Ricci
Prop 8 The Musicalis a short, three minute long musical that features celebrities such as Jack Black, John C. Reilly, Maya Rudolph, Craig Robinson, Neil Patrick Harris and Allison Janney, among others. The musical basically protests Proposition 8 passing California in November 2008, which prohibited gay marriage.

The musical begins with a group of people singing about how now is a good time to be gay and nothing can go wrong. But then, a second group of people onto the stage singing about hate and how gay marriage being legal will teach children in schools about sodomy, so they need to pass Proposition 8 to avoid this.

Cue Jack Black who appears as Jesus. He teaches both groups about what the Bible says, and accuses the group advocating Proposition 8 of picking and choosing what they believe from the Bible. For example, the Bible prohibits people from eating shrimp cocktails but allows women to be sold into slavery, yet most people choose to ignore those laws. He also reminds everyone that the U.S. was founded with the intent of separating church and state.

And then, at the end, Neil Patrick Harris sings to everyone about the financial benefits to the state of legalizing gay marriage, which makes everyone in the musical see how Proposition 8 should not be passed.

Prop 8 The Musical was written by Marc Shaiman and directed by Adam Shankerman. Shaiman is known for composing the music for the movie, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, among other things. The video was meant to pick apart the arguments against gay marriage, and it was released as a viral video on the web in December of 2008. The video was originally posted on the Funny or Die website, and Shankerman was quoted on mahalo.com as saying, "I am grateful for the invitation from Funny or Die to use their website to express myself the way God likes it best: through music, lyrics and humor. Who could have imagined that such a dark moment in California's history could result in the fantastically fun week making this video."

A quote from Prop 8 The Musical:

Friend, to me it seems you pick and choose,

Well please choose love instead of hate

Besides your nation was built on separation of church and state

-Jack Black as Jesus

    Excellent!
The right has turned Jesus into a hate-mongering bigot.
    Christian conservative is an oxymoron.
