When I purchased this place 5 years ago, the furnace and air conditioner were only a year old. The cost of propane was only .87 cents a gallon. It has more than doubled that now. Last year it was $1.43 a gallon. It's up 33% from last year. For folks like me on a fixed income, that hits us hard. The government was gracious enough to give us a 2.3% cost of living increase. Wow!! That doesn't even touch how much more I spend on gas to go get groceries, the cost of groceries that have gone up because of gas rates, and now the propane. Kind of makes a person wonder. I get an additional 51$ a month starting January 1st. Meanwhile, if my son usues only a gallon of milk a week, I'm still paying nearly 10$ more a month just on milk for my kid to have milk on his breakfast cereal. The cost of everything has gone up.
It's getting rediculous anymore. I suppose I'd have been upset if propane had gone up 20 cents this year, but I'd have dealt with it. But to increase this much, what is a person to do? I've closed off every unused room in my house. I'm trying to cut down on my energy consumption. I'll do what I can.

Post a CommentYes, I solved the problem. I moved south, and into a home with a geothermal heat system. My average electic bill is 200$ a month, but I have no gas or propane bill. It's a definite improvement.
i see this post is over 2 years old, and hope things are better than they were 2 years ago. For myself i wish i could say they were financially at least things are not. I never caiught up with the gas/heating hikes from 2 years ago.
I found a used kerosene heater for free on craigslist (or was it free cycle?). I run it a few times a day to heat up a small area of the house. It seems more economical to use than propane.
We all seem to be strapped with the economy in the toilet. You will realize in a few years as energy prices continue to rise that cost of living increases will never catch up or stay in line with the actual cost of living.
May I suggest wood heat?
