While healthy dental hygiene does certainly begin at home, it's important to see your dentist every six months for a check-up and a deep cleaning with the dental hygienist. Cleanings are painless, they simply scrub your teeth with little noisy instruments and a lot of water and some gritty paste, and they will also take x-rays of your teeth to see if you have any underlying issues that need to be addressed, such as cavities or possible root canal work. After your cleaning, the dentist will come in to poke around your mouth and examine your x-rays to either give you a clean bill of health or alert you to any problems. If you do have problems, it's best to address them right away rather than wait until they get worse. A cavity can easily be filled, a root canal is much more extensive and expensive.
At home, brushing and flossing are the two best things you can do to keep your mouth clean and healthy. Brushing after each meal or sugary drink is super important. Sugar rests on the surfaces of teeth and causes cavities. Brush gently as not to damage enamel, and brush thoroughly; it should take you no less than three minutes to completely brush your teeth. Brush your tongue! People think this is weird, but it's not, it's necessary! Bacteria can just sit there on the surface of your tongue, hanging out with your teeth and causing decay.
Flossing is just as, if not more, important as brushing. Floss twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, and again after each meal if you have time. Also using mouthwash, such as Listerine, is pretty important. But you must do it for thirty seconds or longer, and don't rinse immediately with water.. you must allow it's antibacterial properties to work!
Whiting is best left to the pros as well. At hoe whitening kits just don't work all that well, plus they can be harsh on your teeth's enamel. Whitening procedures done professionally are far superior when it comes to results and it's much safer for your teeth in general. Whitening performed at your dentist's office will typically occur in sessions, and you can go as light as you like!
Taking care of your teeth is important, and it's good for you too. And please take care of them, you need them for the rest of your life!
