At the beginning of the game, the players in your group will form some kind of method for taking turns. For example, you may go first, then Bob, Fred, and George will take their turns. Follow this routine for each hole, so that each person knows when they should be up and ready to take a swing. This provides for a more efficient game, so the groups behind yours on the course are not always waiting on you and your buddies to decide whose turn it is. Also, as soon as everyone finishes a hole, replace the flag and move on quickly to prevent delays.
Once everyone has teed off from the starting position on the hole, the owner of the ball furthest away from the hole is the next person to take a shot. Play continues in this manner until everyone has sunk their ball. Then move to the next hole. If there is a group still playing the hole you are moving to, be sure they are all at least on the green before your group begins to tee off. For short, par 3 holes, allow the players ahead of you to completely finish and move on their next hole before beginning on this hole.
When someone is taking a shot, you should stand far behind them and be quiet during the entire swing. Chatting in the background can be very distracting to most golfers, and talking too much while playing will not get you invited to play again. Along with not talking, do not do any noisy fidgeting, such as jingling the change in your pocket or opening gum or candy.
Taking care of the golf course while you are playing is about a part of proper golf etiquette. If you pull up a chunk of the ground when making a swing, you should replace it. Some courses provide the golf carts with a sand and grass seed mixture that you can pour into the divot you have made. If you are on the green and pull up some grass, repair it using a divot tool, which looks like a small two pronged fork. If you don't know how to effectively use the device, have a fellow player or someone in the pro shop instruct you before playing.
