Learn How to Keep Your Dog from Pulling on the Leash

You are probably reading this article because you are wondering how to keep your dog from pulling on the leash. Well, in order to do this, you are going to need to do some leash training with him. Once you do so, your dog will walk happily right next to you, stopping whenever you stop, turning whenever you turn and walking in step with you. This is something that you can successfully do if you exert and effort and some patience too.

The first thing that you will need to do is choose the right type of collar and leash for your dog. If you own a big dog, such as a golden retriever or a Labrador, then you should use a head collar in your leash training. This is a type of leash that is used for big dogs because it will keep your dog from pulling on the leash. It is also a good leash to use for an aggressive dog since it will allow you to exert maximum control over him. On the other hand, if you have a small dog, you can choose almost any type of leash, including a head leash.

Once you have chosen the correct type of dog leash you will need to make sure that you have the appropriate length of leash. It should only be six feet long. A leash that is any longer will simply give your dog the opportunity to demonstrate his dominating behavior, as he will be able to walk in front of you instead of following you.

Whenever you are just getting started with leash training, you should start out in your own backyard. You will need to decide which side you want your dog to walk on. Most people will choose their left side. Regardless of which side you choose to use, make sure that you always use that same side. Now as your dog begins to walk side by side with you, give him treats. It is very important to be consistent while you are leash training your dog so that he will begin to understand and follow your command. Of course, you will need to continue with this form of leash training as you briskly and randomly walk around your yard.

Now that you know how to be successful with leash training, you should be able to keep your dog from pulling on the leash every time that you take him for a walk. This should make both of you happy.

With my big yard I don't ever take my dogs out on a leash, maybe to the Vet. Good article.
