Proper Surfing Attire

Dress to Surf

Proper surfing clothing doesn't really cross your mind when you are first learning to surf. It starts to become an issue if you are not wearing surf trunks and your pants are getting ripped off your body in 3 foot surf. Or maybe you think you do not need surf trunks and you try surfing in cut offs. Not a good idea. Even the wrong choice of surf trunks can ruin your day, if they are to long and you try to stand up on a large wave and you end up standing on your ill fitting surf trunks and slip. This can also become an issue if you do not wear a rash guard for a top and the surfboard wax rubs your nipples raw.

This will keep you out of the water for weeks believe me, it happened to me when I was in Hawaii. This can put a serious damper on your surfing activities and you will also find it difficult to wear any shirt at all for several days. I know you are thinking why would I say these crazy things surf shorts to long and surfing with out a rash guard stuff. Because I have seen plenty of people make all sorts of mistakes on the beach. It is my feeling with a little foresight and proper surf attire some of the issues can be avoided. You see I used to surf in clothes that were not really made for surfing. They ripped out while I was surfing and basically didn't last like good surfing clothing is made to.

Good surfing clothing is sewn differently. Not like standard clothing and surfing clothing is generally constructed with different fabrics, styles and colors that can handle the harsh beach environment. Sure we all have our favorite brands of surfing clothing for one reason or another. But I recommend that you test several differently brands before you decide on which one you like the best. Most of the surf trunks are made for comfort and functionality. I like the types that have velcro pockets, but that still never insures that the surf wont open them for you. Rash guards are essential in warm water and many times I have had to use them in wet suits. For those long sessions, they can also provide a little more insulation if you need it. Many times online you will find less expensive deals that at the stores. Probably because they may be selling last years color or fashions. There are still good buys and the quality will be the same of course. Wearing the proper surf attire can be an important safety factor when surfing. It makes sense to maintain proper body temperature by either wearing clothes that hold in the heat or cool you off. Of course this can make or break your day when you are in the water. The more comfortable you are the better you will surf. The less potential you have to become injured or over exposed to the elements where ever you are planing on surfing.
