Properly Moderating a Role-Playing Group

Views from a Moderator

In this day an age, text-based role players have moved on, gotten married or done other things with their lives. (Though, there are some role players who are still interested in the escapism that role playing provides.) Therefore, one of my friends (we will call her Lee) and I had come together to form a modern role-playing group. First, when creating a role playing group, you will want to check out what is popular among the role players. What type of storylines grab you and other players. It is almost like advertising for a company's job openings. You want them to be interested enough to share their talents with you.

The group that was created with the modern view had one base SL. (Story Line) Which was built and fit together with smaller side SL's. This way everyone was able to have a piece of the pie, and did not feel left out. As well there is a weekly Newsletter that was constructed with teasers, or possible SL twists that might, or might not happen to keep people engrossed. Always keep the doors of communication open, for others to share views, as well as allow them feedback on the SL.

Someone might have a fresher view on how to approach a situation. As well, a good thing to remember, the characters that are created by other people, are their characters. Not yours. Before every choosing to create a dilemma, progress, or simple change that would effect their char, be certain to be courteous and ask permission. A lot of times, it is easy to burn someone who is interested in the same position, or route that you are taking in the SL. Be cautious when approaching a new twist, or considering placing your character into a relationship status.

A good SL, will have a way for players to communicate as well as RP. It is wise to have a Message Board, or MB available to your players. That way, if they are not able to Role Play or RP for weeks, they will have a way to RP with their fellow people, even if it is board based RP. As well the board allows player to express things as character journals. Intimate thoughts of their character, that others can read, but out of common courtesy cannot respond to.

Mostly, one has to keep an open mind at all times. As a MOD or Moderator you have to understand that the SL does not evolve around you. You must be flexible to the changes that others will want to bring in. Be certain to express if someone is trying to bring in a character that will not work, that they should consider going another route with their character. The SL is for everyone to enjoy as a group. Not just one person to enjoy at one time. As long as all parties are agreeable to that, then there should not be further issues in the future. Remember, RP was created as a way to enjoy writing skills shared by all. So get out there and have fun creating a vision!

Well, to be short. Which is funny because I am rather short. Ok I digress. I live in the central/southern part of the US. I enjoy writing, and singing, and I almost have the american dream.  View profile
