Pros and Cons of Blogging for Money

Paul Immanuel
Many people blog out of their interest and their desire to share their lives with the world. But there is an increasing number of people who see blogging as a viable option to earn another stream of income and be known for their expertise. Is it as easy as it seems? What factors does one consider before leaping into this venture? Here are some pros and cons you might want to think about.

Pros
1. Low cost
If you see blogging as a career or a business you are setting up, the startup cost is very low or even free to have a blogging business. A decent domain name costs about $10 a year and a good webhosting service like Bluehost only costs as low as $6.95 a year. (Bluehost offers free a domain if you buy their webhost). For the free route, a Blogger account would suffice.

2. You can pull out any time
Unlike many types of business, having a blogging business allows you to stop operating anytime with minimal losses. You can even just leave your blog idle for as long as you want but traffic to your site will dwindle over time.

3. Flexible Working Hours
3am in the morning or 4pm in the afternoon? You can work any time you want and anywhere with an internet connection and a laptop. It gives a great meaning to work as you wish and anywhere you like.

4. Earn from what you love
The most alluring factor is to be able to monetize from your interest. Be it wrestling, insurance or earning an income for life, you can blog about your niche interest and command a following. Blogging for an income does not mean you have to choose a popular field because there are always people having interests in the smallest things. You can tap from that pool of interest to earn you a decent income.

Cons
1. Steep Curve
Blogging to earn an income does not mean it is easy. Whilst the setup and blogging process is simple, the customization of your blog and trying to drive quality traffic to it can be difficult. What is the use of having a blog and putting up content but have few people to view it? Some people might be discouraged and drop out of blogging after a while.

2. Not a Passive Income
Blogging for money requires a lot of hard work. It needs great content and a good knowledge of the internet and its technologies. You have to continually source for ways to monetize your blog - be it affiliate marketing, selling your own products or improving click-throughs for advertisements.

3. Consistency Required
It is futile to have visitors come to your website and never come back again. Consistency applies to attracting repeated viewers as well as putting up great content. Without consistency in your type of posting and jumping across very diverse topics will cause your readers to lose interest. So even if your hours are flexible, you still have to be consistent.

Earning an income from blogging is a great alternative or new stream of income, but it might not be as easy as it seems.

That all seems quite reasonable $6.95 for a domain name but still I am not sure about the benefits of blogging through your own domain and do you have to continually talk about one subject. Is this the key to consistency?
