Pros and Cons of Creating a Homeschool Website

One of the advantages of running a homeschool program is that you have more freedom when it comes to activity choices. Since you are working with a smaller group of kids and you have access to your personal and professional resources, you have the opportunity to teach your kids practical skills in addition to academic skills. One of the most valuable skills that you can teach kids is how to utilize the Internet. This can be done in several ways, however, website development is a great place to begin.

Pros of Creating a Website for Your Homeschool Program

Creating a website for your homeschool program is a great way to teach through active learning activities. Obviously the first skill that can be developed by developing a website is website development. You can teach your kids how to use a template program to create a website and/or you can teach them how to create a website using HTML and JAVA script. You can also teach your kids about running an online business and online marketing.

In addition to being used as a learning tool a homeschool website can also be used as a communication tool. You can use your website to connect with other homeschoolers and with other educators. You can accommodate monitored chat sessions and video conferences through your website and you can provide your kids with a safe space to voice their opinions and to post their school work online.

Cons of Creating a Website for Your Homeschool Program

While a website can be a great educational tool it doesn't come without hazards. The first hazard that having a homeschool program website produces is the threat of your site being hacked. When this occurs your site may be infected with a virus or a malware program that steals information about your family or those that you communicate with through your site. Another threat is that your kids can be targeted by cyber bullies or other predators. This is why it is so very important to monitor all activity on your website and to supervise your kids while they are online.

Another con of creating a website for your homeschool program is that it is a lot of work, especially if you want your site to earn money. It will also take money if you want your own domain name. If you want your own domain name then you will have to pay for the domain name registration and you will have to pay for hosting fees. While these fees are not excessive, the costs do add up.

I think the pros outweigh the cons. Good ideas here.
