Pros and Cons of Hiring an Exterminator to Spray the Exterior of Your Home for Insects

Kassidy Emmerson
I hate insects that sting because I've had my share of painful encounters with them. I also hate spiders, mainly the big ugly ones. Every year here come wolf spiders, yellow jackets, wasps, ants and other pests. And every year I battle them for my house. This spring I was considering hiring an exterminator to spray the exterior of my house. I talked to one respectable company and they offered me a discounted price and a six-month guarantee. So I hired them. Read this informative article and find out the pros and cons of hiring an exterminator spray the exterior of your home for insects.

The Pros

1. Spray the Exterior of Your House and You'll Have No Bug Problems
Right after the exterminator sprayed my home, the only insects you saw were dead ones. The spray they used leaves a residue that's supposed to protect my house until winter. If I have a bug problem, they'll come back for free to treat the house again. It's been three months and I still haven't had any bug problems at all.

2. Hiring an Exterminator Is Convenient
Hire an exterminator to apply one application of insect spray to your house and you're done. It sure beats having to run out and buy can after can of wasp and yellow jacket spray, ant traps, and other conventional methods to kill insects as problems arise.

3. Chemical Safety
According to the exterminator, the pesticides they use are safe to be used around children and pets. Since I have both running around my house, that's important to me.

The Cons

1. The Exterminator Kills All Bugs
I have to return to the first "pro" here. Unfortunately, insecticides can't differentiate between "good" insects and "bad" ones. So, have an exterminator spray the exterior of your house to kill one type of bug, and they all get zapped.

2. Spraying the Exterior of Your House Is Messy
When exterminators spray around the windows of your house, there's bound to be overspray onto the panes. That means, after the spray dries, you'll need to wash your windows.

3. Hiring An Exterminator Isn't Cheap
I paid an exterminator $200 to spray the exterior of my home. One season I spent around $80 to buy sprays and traps. So, you can save a lot of money by spraying the exterior of your home yourself. Hire an exterminator and you pay for the convenience of not having to deal with the insects yourself.

I have a pesticide guy or "bug guy" and i live in a place where there are a lot of different types of bugs that i dont like all over me. They charge by the square footage of your home,no matter what the first couple of times that they came i seen more bugs running and dead than i ever imagined. After the treatments continued though the bugs are pretty much non existant. It took a while for all those bugs to dig in and it will take a couple of treatments for them to go away. There are also different types of treatments and you will have to discuss with your pesticide person what they use and if it is not something that you approve of then you will just have to find someone else who does what you want. Here i have them put down a pretty strong mix. There are scorpions and spiders that i dont want near me, after my last ER trip due to a bug bite that made me unable to walk it was time to get the bug guy. and I haven't (knock on wood) had any problems since. A friend of mine was telling me recently that the "bug guy" she'd hired had not actually done a good job at exterminating the insects around the outside of her home. She felt ripped off because she could still see them after they had supposedly been sprayed! My husband has talked about getting an exterminator, but I really feel that the cons outweigh the pros, at least from my perspective.

Great job of laying out the pros and cons of exterminating services. To me though, killing the good bugs is a huge con since I would hate to loose those bees, butterflies, and ladybugs.
