Pros and Cons of Homeschooling Your Child

Matthew Schieltz
So you've decided that you want to homeschool your children, eh? Homeschooling is legal in all of the 50 United States, and it is definitely an option to consider. If you have decided that you are going to homeschool, then you better be prepared for everything that you need to do in order to succeed. Because you are taking your children's education into your own hands you will have added responsibilities as well as added benefits from choosing to do this. There are definitely some issues that you need to consider before leaping into this major decision.

One issue with Homeschooling that people often don't think of beforehand is the issue of socialization. How will your child or children be socialized? Will they still be allowed to be on the sports teams at school? If they aren't able to, perhaps your city or county will have sports teams for children. But playing a sport isn't necessary; only making sure that they receive enough socialization and interaction with kids is what you need to be concerned with. There are many resources in your community that will make sure that your children are active with others. You can let your children join 4-H, Girl and Boy Scouts, or even take them to designated Homeschooling groups. All of these ideas will have your children around others and not just isolated at home.

An added responsibility of the parent in homeschooling their child is to make out lesson-plans beforehand. This can often be an easy thing to do with support from the homeschooling company or other parents that homeschool also. Helping your child to complete their tasks on a daily basis is what you will essentially be doing, and the lesson plan will make sure that you stick to the agenda instead of stumbling in the darkness.

One of the major benefits of homeschooling is that your children will be at home and you'll be able to spend that precious time with them. In addition, homeschooling through high school is an option and could be considered as a good, viable option. High school kids especially go through high amounts of peer pressure and having them at home for school may prove to be an excellent way to avoid some of that. Also, your kids will also learn discipline as well as the responsibility that they have of getting their own work done.

So while thinking about your child's education, homeschooling should always be an option for parents to consider. The many benefits of what could come out of it may even perhaps outweigh the reasons for not homeschooling. Your children's education is important so it is very necessary for you to make the right choice for them at this crucial stage in their life!
