A few years back, a person had to get admission in a formal design school to gain knowledge about the field. In today's world, students can get admitted to any interior design school affiliated to a university. Things have gotten a bit more common in today's world. Which should definitely come as no surprise to people who are familiar with this industry.
Almost like an architect, professional interior designers must be accredited by the industry to proceed with their trade. They must be put through rigorous study and experimentation, before being allowed to take a licensing test. The rigorous procedure followed by the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification), will require that the tester has at least six years of experience. Two years of which are schooling, and four are required to be from actual work. This helps to assure that the designer has the proper training.
At foremost, students should look for a FIDER certified college or university, and work towards a bachelor's degree; Which is essential for
commercial work. However, a master's degree and a doctorate can even be obtained.
Not many designers and design students consider marketing to be a part of the trade. Though in reality, interior designing comprises of marketing,
networking and public relations as well. A few professionals will even be advised to take up management classes to achieve higher sales
and increase their profits. This isn't that rare at all, and some people may even feel that ithis industry takes more work than they originally thought.
People are visual by nature, and one can only have a better chance at winning over a client, if he can illustrate to them. Hence, art classes can help while
talking to clients. Nothing should be ignored but should be kept in mind as they all come to together in the design industry. SInce by it's nature, it has a ton of competition.
Now let's look at the intense part of an interior design school. Apart from the conventional classes and the daily schedule of reading, tests, and
other class works, a designer is expected to finish an assigned design project from time to time. This, comparatively requires a much longer time, and is usually tougher to complete. Often times, creativity is is necessary to stay ahead of the project. Usually it will take a lot more effort to stand out.
An important aspect of one's career, which the interior design school can assist with, is in finding that specific area of design that one is comfortable with.
There are different fields to specialize inside an interior design school. There are interior design schools that teach about office setups, malls, banks or even motels. Other designers will even deal in homes and apartments. Knowing what works for the inidividual student is usually going to take some work.
On the positive side, a designer will often have a lot of flexibility. For example, a designer could operate their own workroom or fabric storehouse, be a partner with another design firm, be a paint specialist, or even be a wall designer. Floor and roof designers are only one out of hundred design specialists out there. So in that sense, there's a lot of freedom as to where an interior designer wants to take their career. How one puts his designer education into use is up to him, his interest, his need, and their own ambition.
Yet the road to becoming one is hard in itself.
