Alternative Medicine Brings Relief

Mr. Ernest Okon was once one of those middle-aged men walking about with a medical contraption called catheter but not any longer, thanks to alternative medicine. Close to two years Mr. Okon suffered from an ailment known as prostate enlargement.

Prostate enlargement is an inflamation of the prostate bladder that causes it to enlarge to the extent that it presses against the urinary bladder and temporally blocks it and thereby creates difficulty in normal passing of without assistance. In order to assist men with the condition to pass urine effectively, a medical device that has a plastic pouch and tubes is inserted into the body to reach the urine bladder to drain it. Whenever the pouch is full, it is emptied to allow more wastes to refill it. Apart from the inconvenience of carrying the pouch the swollen prostate produces serious pains to the sufferer.

Linked Causes

Prostate enlargement is linked to not properly treated sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It is believed that some STDs incubate in the body system especially around the prostate to later give rise to prostate enlargement. Age is also another linked factor that manifests the disease. It is well known that men 40 year and above have more chances of suffering the disease. Strangely enough, married men are known to also suffer more from the ailment than unmarried ones and following closely to this is the race factor. Generally, it is a know fact that people of color are more prone to suffering from prostate enlargement and cancer than people of other races.

A New Lease of Life

Doctors at a large government funded medical institution in Lagos, Nigeria had counseled Mr. Okon to get used to his catheter and do changes regularly as recommended. First, Mr. Okon had problems with finances after more than 13 months in and out of the medical centre for treatment; secondly, he was not getting any better. After weighing his conditions, Mr. Okon decided that he be discharged and let go home. A kindly relative got to know about his condition and recommended that he should try alternative medicine. A Herbal Medical Practitioner was consulted and he was given two bottles of herbal medicines to drink in measured glasses daily. By the time Mr. Okon had taken the first bottle by half, he was feeling relief enough to allow him discard the former assisted urinary device he was wearing for months. He believes that by the time he finishes the second bottle, he would have been completely cured all within a three week period of therapy.

The relief Mr. Okon got by patronizing alternative medicine was money and health-wise far more than what he got from orthodox medical practice. Whereas he spent about $50 for the alternative medicine, he had spent more than $2,500 and many months of lost man-hours seeking relief in orthodox medicine.

The Need for Collaboration

There is no gainsaying the fact that the practices of both orthodox and alternative practitioners are not benefiting humanity. What humanity is losing is the greater benefit that could arise from close collaboration of both practices. For example, in the case of Mr. Okon, apart from the financial expenses made, he lost huge number of productive man-hours to failure to access effective cure. That situation would have been avoided if there were close consultation and collaboration between the practices. By hindsight, it is assumed that many cases of the like of Mr. Okon's are out there waiting for solutions. Let there be closer collaboration and consultation between the alternative and orthodox medical practitioners, the society will be the better for it.
