Protect-A-Bed Premium Mattress & Pillow Protector Review
You Have This Mom's Vote....Dust Mites Be Gone!
So, when I was contacted to do a review for the Protect-A-Bed Premium Mattress Protector and pillow protector, I thought sure I'll do a review. I thought the mattress protector would be similar to the waterproof one I currently have - sort of cushy on top and a bit crinkly on the bottom. After a few washes, the cushiness is gone and you're left with more crinkle and the mattress pad starts to loose it's shape a bit and gets harder to put on the bed. This was not the case with the Protect-A-Bed mattress protector.
The first thing I did upon receiving the Protect-A-Bed was look over the packaging. Companies spend lots and lots of money on their packaging and use some really creative people to get the job done so instead of tearing it open I wanted to really see what the benefits of the product were. Um, I have to admit I was sort of sold after the first thing I read:
"Fact: Every night the human body loses at least a pint of body fluids through skin pores and mouth, as well as millions of skin flakes". (yuck and ewwww). There's more.... "Unprotected mattresses create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites (a major cause of asthma, eczema and rhinitis)". Protect-A-Bed
The Protect-A-Bed has lots of benefits that your regular ol' mattress pad does not. First it has a dust mite and allergy protection barrier and its Miracle Membrane® is not only waterproof but is also air vapor porus (I had no clue what that meant either). Air vapor porous basically means that if you are sweating, your pillow and mattress will not absorb the sweat and you won't get hot. It's also stain resistant so spills and other bodily fluids won't leave a stain. Since my youngest occasionally still jumps in our bed and is still prone to accidents, it'll be nice to know that we are fully protected. As an added bonus the Protect-A-Bed is classified as a Class 1 medical device with the FDA. I tried to navigate the FDA site but that's a feat in itself but I think having the Class 1 listing is definitely a good thing.
From a personal perspective, I really do like this mattress protector. It's lightweight, and the covering is soft and the waterproof part has no crinkle. Plus it fit our thick pillow top mattress. I'm half tempted to haul my mattress protector and pillow protector with me when we go on vacation since I know it'll protect me from all those itty bitty dust mites that are lurking around (okay, if I think about it too much, I could become a hermit). I'll definitely bring my own pillow with the pillow protector in place. Also, Protect-A-Bed gives you a ten year warranty on their protectors if the laminate or fabric is damaged, they'll replace it for you. That really shows they stand by their product (just don't use bleach or dry on a high setting by itself). Plus they have the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.
I wondered when a mattress should get replaced and syndicated columnist, Heloise® on the The Better Sleep Council website said that you should replace your mattress every 5-7 years. Of course, I think most of us probably extend the life of our mattress even longer. Why do I bring this up? Well, the Protect-A-Bed mattress and pillow protectors are definitely more expensive than your average mattress pad but when you think about how much you've invested in your mattress and how much you value the health of your family, getting the Protect-A-Bed is sort of a no brainer. The Premium Mattress Protector that I received retails for $79.99 (queen size) and the Premium Pillow Protector for $19.99 (standard size). So over the course of 7 years, the mattress protector is only costing you $11.42/year - that seems pretty reasonable to me. I'm definitely going to purchase the twin ($59.99) and full size ($69.99) protectors for my girls as well as the pillow protectors. I'll just feel too guilty knowing that Mommy & Daddy are protected from those dust mites and allergens and they're not.
If you'd like to see how Protect-A-Bed got the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, then visit the Taste of Cincinnati over Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31) and stop by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute on Tour . You'll be able walk through this interactive exhibit.
