Protecting your baby from food allergies is a process. A baby is not born with a list of foods that cause allergic reactions, and specific food issues are almost always exclusively found after an allergic reaction has occurred. If you or your spouse is a person with numerous allergies or you come from families where food allergies seem to occur, extra caution should be applied when introducing new foods to a babies diet. Here a few tips to help protect your baby:

Protecting Baby from Allergies Tip: Feed Baby a Particular Food Not a Blended Product at First

Most allergies are to a particular food, like eggs, dairy products, or nuts, and when a parent discovers this allergy within their baby the food is eliminated. However, if you immediately begin to feed your baby jars of blended food that contain numerous ingredients and base products pulverized together, locating the particular culprit may be difficult. When you begin to introduce baby food into the diet stick with singular types or flavors. If baby experiences an adverse reaction, the root of it can be immediately recognized and that particular food can be eliminated.

Protecting Baby from Allergies Tip: Take It Slow

When you are introducing new baby foods, an additional consideration is to introduce them slowly. Stick with one flavor or variety for several days, monitor your baby, and if all is well add another food to the rotation with this one. If an allergic reaction occurs, it is highly likely to be the fault of the new food. Replace it with another baby food immediately. By taking it slow you can identify problems with baby's diet quickly and act accordingly.

Protecting Baby from Allergies Tip: Doctor Visits

If your baby seems to be suffering from an allergy, take them to the doctor. Your physician will be able to determine if the problem is a definite allergic reaction or a system intolerance (i.e. lactose intolerance). If it is an allergy, depending on the severity of your baby's reaction and their age, the doctor may send you home with an injector for emergency use. Follow your doctor's advice in its entirety and learn any new techniques or procedures he or she recommends for dealing with your baby's food allergy.

Allergies are not to be messed with, and especially not when dealing with a helpless infant. Stay observant and at the first sign of trouble, contact your physician for a professional opinion on your observances concerning your baby's diet and subsequent reactions.
