Protecting Your Children Online

With a huge array of ways that your children can fall victim to dangers it is extremely important that you know the best ways to help protect them and also ensure that you are getting the help that you need. Many parents are clueless when it comes to internet safety and find themselves being schooled on the subject by their children. However, this can leave dangerous openings that still allow your child to get hurt in more ways than you ever imagined possible.

Look for a browser that allows you to add plug-ins geared towards safety. A good example of this would be something such as Firefox. While some other browsers also allow this, Firefox has a plug-in called Glubble which is free that allows parents to set access to search engines, websites and more from any computer in their or even at work. This can allow you to still keep tabs on what your children are doing on the internet from work without paying any monthly fees.

Other tools to look into include things such as a key logger. These programs are useful for keeping track of instant messages, e-mails and other communications that your child might be engaged in. Because the key logger runs in the background your child will be unaware, but you will be able to monitor activity and look out for any dangerous behavior.

Additional steps to take include actually discussing with your child the dangers of the internet and teaching them proper ways to interact with others online. Stressing points of not sharing personal information like full name, address and phone number are absolutely essential to personal safety. Other information that should not be shared includes things such as school attended, exact age and names of family members.

Taking the time to actually teach your child about internet safety is one of the most important things that parents can ever teach their children. Looking for as many opportunities as possible to educate your child is extremely important and will enable you to properly work with your child to be sure you know what they are doing at all times, and feel confident that even when you cannot stand right above them, that they are still making the proper choices. A small amount of effort in prevention is much better than anything else that you could possibly do, but will still require involvement and follow up on your part to ensure the safety of your child.
