Protecting Children from Sexual Predators

Calgary Does it Best!

Vicki Messer
In light of today's economy and all the problems with home foreclosures and loss of jobs, one might think the issue of a national child protection organization would be placed on the back burner. However, the most valuable asset this nation has is its children. They are the next generation of Americans who will lead and direct our country. If so many of the next generation are forced to deal with child abuse and sexual exploitation, what kind of generation will that become? Protecting children from sexual predators is everyone's responsibility and the city of Calgary in Canada has taken this responsibility to a new level. A level that would serve as a great pattern for other nations and cities.

"Help Create a Child Safe Nation"
This slogan is now appearing in large letters on the upper portion of many city buses in Calgary. Below that on the lower portion of these buses another comment is posted: "Child Porn is not Porn . . . It's a Crime Scene". These two slogans bring the battle for the nation's children into the forefront of the minds of its citizens.

More Than a Slogan
The slogans on the buses are much more than just a slogan, however. The citizens are working closely with legislators to pass a bill known as "Protecting Children from Sexual Predators Act". This campaign created by the Canada Family Act is designed to involve the citizens and create more pressure on lawmakers to pass this bill.

The Right Approach to Changing Laws
Calgary has a wonderful approach to helping make their children safe from sexual predators. We, in this county, would do well to adopt some of their ideas and their enthusiasm about protecting our children. When we as a nation, begin to get serious and cry out to our lawmakers to change the way sexual predators are punished within our laws, we just might see some major changes here in the United States as well.

"We, the People" Can Change Things
"We, the people" can truly make a difference. However, we must be moved out of our own apathy and bring the sexual abuse of our children into the public eye. We need constant reminders that our children are at risk. Whether it is painting the words on a bus or on billboards or commercials on TV, there are many very effective ways to keep this message in the forefront of our citizens, and thus, applying pressure on lawmakers to make this a priority.

Thank You, Calgary!
I just want to say "thank you" to the citizens of Calgary for their efforts in fighting the sexual abuse and exploitation of their children. Citizens who join together for a common cause can change things. Once the public outcry reaches the ears of the lawmakers, the focus on protecting children becomes more important. Well done, Calgary!
