Contact Your Customers Ahead of Time:
If your business is dependent on customers coming into your store, be sure you put up notices as soon as you know your new address. Have fliers and business cards printed up to hand out to your customers and to mail out with invoices to alert everyone of your new address. You will also want to consider ordering checks and stationary with your new address and contact information.
Set the Date of the Official Move of the Business:
If you are closed over the weekend, plan to move during the weekend. This will give you time to get things moved before you open your doors for business on Monday morning. You can also close the business down for the time it will take you to accomplish the move. Small businesses can be moved successfully in a day while a large store may take a week to pack and set everything back up.
Pack Up Your Business to Move:
If it is an option to you, begin packing up things you will not need right before or after you move your business. This can be old financial records, out-of-season products, and anything else that you currently have in storage. It is also a good time to go through and weed out anything you no longer need. Pack your last minute things as early as possible the day of the move. Be sure to mark all of your boxes so that you will not be digging through the old storage items to find what you currently need. As soon as you arrive at your new location, place the last minute things in the area where they will be needed first. For example, set your computer in its new location so you will not have to hunt for it when you are settling in to your business's new home.
Advertise Your Business Move:
Plan to Have a Grand Opening or Grand Re-Opening for your business when you move. A grand opening will bring a lot of attention to your store and will give your new neighbors a chance to satisfy their curiosity about what you are doing. It may also bring you new repeat customers once they find out what you can offer them. A grand opening is also a good way to let your established customers check out your new business location.
Planning how to move your business will help you to relieve the stress of the physical act of moving your business. If you have a detailed plan including where things will go in their new location, you will be able to move your business to its new location as smoothly as possible.
