Protecting Your Home from Burglary

A home invasion is one of the most devastating things that a family can go through. Not only will it cost you financially, it can rob you of something far more valuable: your sense of security in your own home. The thought of a stranger going through your most private and personal possessions can leave you feeling violated, and the loss of family heirlooms can be the most upsetting of all.

But, take heart because there are steps that you can take yourself to minimize the chances that you will ever have to deal with such a situation. Put the following ideas into practice and you can send that robber to target the next home.

Think like a burglar: Take an objective look at your home and evaluate it for weaknesses. Is there a ladder leaning against the side that could provide access to a second floor window? A broken window out back that could let an intruder in? A side door with a broken lock? If you see any problems fix them now.

Trim the hedges: Overgrown trees and bushes provide desirable cover to those looking to walk away with your things. Cut back anything out front and make your home a little less welcoming to intruders.

Join forces: Consider starting a neighborhood watch. Getting everyone involved not only creates a sense of community but it also ensures that extra sets of eyes will be watching over your home even when you can't.

Get a home security system: Investing in a high tech system can give you some piece of mind and that may be worth the monthly fee. You can rest assured that wherever you are your home stands at the ready and is on guard against trouble.

Consider a fake out: Even if you can't afford a pricey home security system consider hanging a sign saying that you have one anyway. Most of the time just to chance that the home is monitored is enough to send a would be burglar to an easier target.

Don't take a vacation from safety: Just because you are away for the week doesn't mean that it has to look that way. Asking a neighbor to park in your driveway, stopping delivery on the mail and newspaper, and putting your lights on a timer all go a long way towards keeping up appearances. Keeping your home safe just takes common sense and a few easy precautions. For even more information on how to prevent a home invasion from happening to you contact your local police department.
