Protecting Yourself Against 'Mail Order Bride' Scams

Find a Beautiful Bride, Not a Fraud

Jessica DelBalzo

It's not uncommon for an American man to seek out a foreign bride, especially if he's been badly burned by the women who inhabit his own country. Unfortunately, fraudulent marriage agencies, dishonest women, and shady mail order bride "brokers" can be detrimental to any man's pursuit of love and commitment. Before deciding to persue marriage with a Russian bride, it's important to make yourself aware of all the possible complications that go along with using a marriage agency.

Instead of looking for an agency or broker who will allow you to select from a catalog of brides, seek out a website devoted to Russian women personal ads. It is important to correspond with your potential mate for some time before deciding to get her a visa and fly her to the United States for your wedding. An online dating site will give you the opportunity to get to know any women you like before either of you dive in to a serious relationship.

You should also know that many widely respected Russian personals' sites recommend avoiding women who are from any one of the following cities: Joshkar-Ola (Yoshkar-Ola) and Mari El Republic, Kazan, Cheboksary, and Gomel. That's not to say you cannot find your mate in one of those locations, but you should proceed with extra caution.

Once you have made a meaningful connection with a Russian woman, I would suggest making plans to visit her in her homeland. If she insists that you bring her to America as quickly as possible, watch out! This could be a scam to get money or airline tickets from you. She may have no intentions of following through on your relationship once you have given her those things.

Since bringing her to the United States can be a bad idea, why not ask to visit your bride in Russia instead? After all, you are planning to spend the rest of your life with this woman. You should be enthusiastic about seeing her homeland, learning about her family and culture, and gaining a better understanding of her environment. In return, she will develop an increasing amount of respect for you after seeing how interested you are in her life.

Though there is no way to guarantee that you will be protected against mail order bride scams by following the advice above, your instincts and intellect will guide you in making the final decision. If all goes well, you'll soon be looking for rings and planning your honeymoon!

spent about $40 recently to exchange emails with a lady via a marriage agency website. You have to pay to send and receive them. I've sent 4 emails and received 4 from this lady, so it's about $5 per email sent or received. She's sent 2 more which I don't plan to receive. In each email I sent her my contact info outside of the website, email address, phone number, and postal addresses. The entire website is nothing but a scam to string you along into sending and receiving ridiculously expensive emails through their website.
