United States of America
Today, August 22, 2010, nearly 1,000 protestors filled the streets near NY's Ground Zero united as one. They were one voice, one mind, with one unified goal. "No mosque! Not here! Not now! Not ever!"
Many of the protestors were family members of the victims of the horrendous attacks on 9/11/01. Nearly nine years have passed, but they have not forgotten. The memories of their loved ones graced their faces. They are the face of America for they suffered great personal loss solely because Islamic extremists wanted to attack America.
Today, the 9/11 families made their sentiments clear, "No Mosque! Not here! Not now! Not ever!"
One can only hope the world, especially Americans, listens. Let us not forget that, one day, exactly what happened to these innocent people could happen to any one of us.
Firefighters, hardhats, Memorial Ride motorcyclists and many others joined in the protest. They had much more to say than "No Mosque." A few notable quotes about notable politicians were "Down with Bloomberg" and "Obama must go!" The first refers to New York City's Mayor Bloomberg who staunchly supports the near Ground Zero location of the proposed mosque. The second quote is self-explanatory.
Signs reigned throughout the protest's off-and-on rain, as well. A shortlist is "Never Forget 9/11, Unmask the Mosque, and Sharia (written in red blood)." Many other examples of the protestors' freedom of expression are in the attached pictures. The podium's sign read, "Land Of The Free! Stop Shariah Before It Stops You!" A variety of eloquent speakers took that podium including a former slave of Islam who opposed the mosque.
New York City's men and women in blue were plentiful and diligent. A few verbal skirmishes arose but peace prevailed.
Throughout it all, one unified sentiment rang, "No Mosque! Not Here! Not Now! Not Ever!" It rang through the streets as the protestors marched to Ground Zero where it was accompanied by an impromptu rendition of "God Bless America."
A few blocks away, mosque proponents attempted to hold a protest against the "No Mosque" protest. However, according to NY1 News, they were dispersed due to the lack of a permit.
